Ah, yes, the humble and often overlooked brown ale! Here at Helms we love the rich, bready, and toffee like malt profile of this style. 6 different malts contribute to this complex medium bodied brew. We use just a touch of hops to provide a lovely counter point for the natural sweetness of barley. This beer pairs well with stews, BBQ, chili & chocolates of all types.

Tap at the brewery. Pours clear dark brown with a small, fizzy tan head, short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is chocolate and toast malt, lightly sweet, dates, medium hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Opaque dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Airy palate, minerally crisp. Earthy brown malts with airy malt cream. Very mild touches of dark chocolate and coffee., Nice tangy dark fruits. Finishes airy and creamy. Some hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Nice Brown.

65 cl bottle.
Pours black color with a large beige head. Floral hops on the nose, very mild coffee notes just on the verge of turning into vegetable notes, mild roast notes as well. Toasty, slightly chocolaty flavor, mild caramel with some wooden notes on the finish. A tad too strong carbonation, makes this feel a bit thin too, somewhat oily palate. Not quite what I was expecting, disappointing.

>> Pours flat, deep inky pour. Nose is neutral, soy sauce, weak overall. Taste is weak, neutral, nothing to it, lifeless. Eh. Not even sure what this was. Certainly not a brown ale.

8 Mar 2014, tap at Helm's Brewing. Dark brown/ruby. Nose is brown sugar and burnt toast. Thin body, faintly oily, mildly fizzy. Toasted malt, sugary overall. Nice enough. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at the brewery. Rating #2. Very nice brown, the best beer that I had there that day. Nutty and a little sweet, enjoyable. (2632)

Dark brown pour with an off-white head. Surprisingly, a very fruity aroma. Plenty of sweet malt, toast, and a mild roasted malt character. Some notes of banana, toffee, and nuts. Flavor is sweet malt and fruit. A fair amount of banana, some berry notes, and toffee. Toasted bread, light roast, chocolate, and nuts. Kind of a mix of an English and Belgian brown ale.
