3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled (from Landbierparadies). Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is slight grains, some mild rye, toasted notes as well as some wood and herbs. Flavour is wood, some nice mellow bitterness, caramel malts and some earth as well. A bit like a slightly milder, but hoppier version of the Zwickel.

Bottle looks simple but really good. Beer in the glass zippy, nice head. Starts mild, fine malty, modest wheaty. Sweet, but not too intense. Light grasy notes in the finish. Quite drinkable. Not bad!

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Draught at Brauerei Hennemann Sambach, May. 2013 Coppery golden. Broken white head. Lemon, apricot and toasted poundcake exude beneath the strong presence of diacetyl. Soft, fuzzy pinpricks of carbonation. Lusciously soft and malty with oodles of poundcake and a toasted bread sweetness. Pleasant nuttiness coincides with toasty hay suggestions. Not a whole lot of definition to the malt, however, as it takes on a grainy, charred breadcrust astringency. Scant hops fail to inspire as they quickly become monotonous in their one-dimensionality. Spent tea-leaf dullness overwhelms the distant aniseed flavors. Diacetyl taints the brightness with a cheese rind putridness. Malt supplies the sweetish finish with beefy weight, complemented by an almond skin sharpness and creamed coffee underpinnings. I’ve been happy with a couple of their other beers, e.g. Sommergold and Zwicklbier Naturtrüb, and there seems to be a decently made beer beneath the diacetyl taint, but it’s nonetheless very difficult to enjoy.

(bottle) pours a clear amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of light butter, treebark and raisins, with a hint of grass and caramel. flavour is mostly grainy roasted malts and caramel, with only the lightest hint of butter, more raisins, some earth, herbal hops and dark chocolate in the light-bitter finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

draft at Hennemann in Sambach. strong diacetyl aroma with some charred / burnt nuts and toffee, turning to foul butterscotch after only a few sniffs. the toffee-ish undertones are nice enough and I can see what this beer should be without the diacetyl fault. body is round and filling in the mouth, carbonation is soft, malt is sticky sweet. bad enough shape that they should not be serving it.

The color is beautiful, intense bronze/orange with a creamy head, and the aroma is mild, malty and slightly fruity. The flavoru has a light sweetness and notes of light butterscotch, malt, fruit, straw, citrus, and the finish is dry and slightly bitter. It’s a delicious one...
