Originally developed for British sailors stationed in India, IPAs were aggressively hopped to help prevent spoilage on long ocean voyages. Now that spoilage isn’t as big a problem, we’ve eased up on the hoppiness just a hair to let the caramel malts shine through. It’s a big beer with big flavor that really lets you appreciate hops in all their glory.

12 ounce bottle from a Kroger. Pours a crystal clear amber color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of floral and herbal hops with a bit of a soapy note. The taste is herbal and citrus hops. Pale malts. Medium bodied. Decent but pretty bland.

Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Amber brew wiht white head. Cascade hops int the aroma. Taste is light malts with a decent grassy hops finish. This palate, weak flavor. If you tried to make a lite IPA it might come out like this - not bad per se and probably better than many lighter styles, but really this is a shadow of the many fine IPAs out there.

Run of the mill, thin bodied IPA. The aroma and taste are muted and textbook IPA with a too-sweet kick on the finish. Reminds of cough syrup sweetness only after the bad medicine taste. Appearance was too light for my taste. Not horrible but not on the buy-again list.

Pours amber with a decent beige head and a fruit and toffee flavor. A bit roasty too.

Bottle from a Grocery Outlet. Pours clear coper with a white head. Light evergreen aroma. Med body or more. Frothy carb. Flavor is mild resin over some light roasted malt. It’s reasonably dry and finishing decently bitter. As good as many craft IPAs. Or maybe I should state so-called craft IPAs.

Brilliant clear copper color with a very appreciable foamy head the better of 2 inches thick and long lasting. Many bubbles rise continually and slowly in the glass. The aroma is malty with a piny hoppiness to it. The flavor is mostly malty but finishes with 25% bitterness or 30 ibu. Prettty malty for an IPAs so let your friends have this one if they’re just getting into good beer. The finish is also slightly metallic. This must be an old brewery.

A bit thin for an IPA, kinda like a lager and IPA mixed together. Taste is mild citrus, malt and burnt sugar. Easy drinking beer.
