Originally developed for British sailors stationed in India, IPAs were aggressively hopped to help prevent spoilage on long ocean voyages. Now that spoilage isn’t as big a problem, we’ve eased up on the hoppiness just a hair to let the caramel malts shine through. It’s a big beer with big flavor that really lets you appreciate hops in all their glory.

Bottle. Very light golden color on this, delivers a decent little fuzzy head. Light and pleasantly quaffable, comes off with a bit more of a malty character than you’d expect for the label, bit starchy, too perhaps. Decent center of the scale pale ale. (#5298, 10/19/2013)

Bottle: Pours a golden color with a light white head. The nose is earthy with some light citrusy hops and a light pale malt note. The flavor is medium bodied, middle-of-the-road hops in the flavor. Fairly low key as far as west coast IPAs go.

Fr0m the c0mmercial descripti0n: "Now that spoilage isn’t as big a problem, we’ve eased up on the hoppiness just a hair to let the caramel malts shine through." ?!? It’s the 21st Century, f0lk. IPAs are ab0ut the h0ps, n0t the caramel! This pale, clear amber brew is even light 0n the caramel in the n0se, with an even fainter am0unt 0f zest and mayhaps s0me grapefruit. The weak flav0r relects what can be garnered fr0m the ar0ma, with a m0derate am0unt 0f bitterness. Meh. And I’ve never used that "w0rd" bef0re.

Golden yellow with a white head. There really isn’t much aroma other than a hint of grain and some grass. Not impressive. The flavor is unfortunately more of the same. I get some grass and grain as well as some soap and a bit of light pine and citrus. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a good beer at all.

Wilmington Island, Ga - Kroger Supermarket - 12 oz bottle. Light copper pour, thin white head. Aroma is pretty much neutral, faint metallic industrial aromas. Flavor is standard budget IPA, some nuttiness, a bit of hard candy sweetness. some breadiness, a faint trace of citrus bitterness. Mouthfeel is thick enough, Not writing home about this one.

A clear amber brew with a thin white head. The nose is sweet apples and leather. There is also some musk and flowers. The taste is like light grapefruit and peanuts. There is also plenty of wood and caramel. Bits of spice in the finish. A light and boring IPA.

Bottle courtesy of my friend Noel - thanks! Aroma is sweet with light caramel and toasted malt. Taste is soft hops, sweet malt, grains and grass. Body is light-medium with a moderate carbonation. Ends with more caramel, toasted malt and light grassy notes.

Pint on draft at Flipdaddy’s. Clear yellow orange color. Good thin off-white head. Good lace. Flavor is pretty mild for an IPA. More like a moderately hoppy pale ale, with a weak malt back bone. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry texture. Decent bitterness. OK, but weak for an IPA

Not really sure I understand what we’re going for here. Too timid to appeal to IPA drinker, but y’know, not exactly a bud lite, either. Some citrusy hops, but mostly bland and watery.
