33cl bottle at home, a gift from my parents-in-law. This Herbakkersbier is the recap of the Herbakkersbier 6.4%, a Belgian Ale beer by De Block Brouwerij (a brewery in Peizegem) which was rather different in style and taste. This stronger one is brewed for the touristic service of the city of Eeklo. I had this 8.5% before, which is a bit a hazy looking amber, an even copper coloured beer with diminishing foam. The brew has an odd earthlike aroma accompanied by dried apricots and a lingering soury flavour. In my opinion, it resembles the Augustijn Grand Cru. The Herbakkersbier beer taste is lightly malted, with a subtle sweetness and mild bitterness too, but the strong feature is a somehow sour mouth. This strong ale reaches a vast 8.5% in alcohol yet it is a smooth drinker by its light body. How to summarize this beer? A soury, honeylike brew with a dry and fairly short ending. A more complex beer which is - alas - not very convincing.

Huge, soft-yellow dense head over clear metallic-golden beer. Inviting grapey-hoppy nose, with a liqueurish alcohol component, fine sweet syrup like malt or maple syrup. Again a mix of hop, nearly harsh even in the beginning, but grapey & perfumey all the same, and not-quite-sweet caramel. Hoppy flavours dominate, no doubt. Slight slickness, soft carbonation, medium bodied, light alcoholwarming. Very surprising - I’m sure it was brewed elsewhere (De Block, IIRC) once, then totally unnoteworthy - this Belgian near-hopbomb is outstanding, certainly in its class of touristic gimmicks.

Bottled. A hazy dark golden beer with a lazing cream colored head. The aroma has notes of malt, citrus, and straw. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, fruit, and citrus, as well as some yeast, leading to a dry and fruity finish. Thanks fonefan for sharing.

Bottle, 8.5%. Fruity aroma, slightly farty. Hazy golden colour. Small stable white head. The flavour is a little sweet, with some grassy hoppiness. Fruity notes with a little spice. Quite good.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a clear golden with a rock solid off-white head leaving laces. Tart, bretty nose. Medium body, a little low in carbonation, sweet fruitiness and astringent Bretty accents leaving a mouthdrying finish. 211009

Re-tasted on 18.04.09 @ Bierloods, and tirth time @ home 15.05.09. Bottle 33 cl. Almost clear dark golden color with a white head. Aroma some yeast and spice, good hops. Medium body. Taste (little) sweet, bit yeasts, spices, and a good bitter finish. Like it. (better as the early version from de Block, many years ago)

Light hazy blond coloured beer with average carbonation and a small white head. Some smaller yeasty particles floating. Rather special aroma, herby, spicy and hoppy hints, slightly yeasty touched. Full palate. Finish is light yeasty with a bitter/sweet balanced finish. Not bad at all.
