Smell is slightly hoppy with a small sweet backbone sent. Color has a nice hue of red almost blackish. Taste is great nice hop profile all the way through the beer nice. Perfect balance of malt followed up after the hop profile. Nice carbonation medium body. This is definitely an IPA. A red one at that. Keep it up heretic brewing nice red ipa.

From bottle in tulip glass. Pours deep mahogany with khaki, two-finger, frothy head. Rich earthy hops and a bit of malt on the nose paving the way for a battle on the palate of these twin features. Malt sweetness provides nice counterpoint to the hops. Works well with strong cheese. I love this style!

Can from Beers of Europe. Brown with a beige head. Up front there’s a strong, pleasing whiff of piney grapefruitey US hops. On drinking there’s chocolate, oak, pine, red berries and grapefruit. Brings to mind a black IPA more than anything else. It’s got the right balance of sweet and bitter for me. However, the mouthfeel does let it down a little. It’s dry, and oddly powdery, as if the chocolate flavour has been obtained by adding instant hot chocolate powdery. It also feels a little too fizzy to suit the style and it definitely needs a bit more body. Whilst the flavours are great and well-balanced and it’s very drinkable, the relatively poor mouthfeel restricts it to merely being good. However, I feel it could be superb on cask.

Cask at the Sir John Gervase Warren. Pours ruby chestnut brown with lace top. Aroma of dark fruits and citrus back notes. Taste of spicy malts and rich fruits. Reminds me of barley wines of bygone days. It took awhile to track this down given Evil Twins NY provenance and Heretic’s Californian one. But it sums up the American dilemma (great taste but too much abv). I guess I could come in and have one of these and then go home. But life is more than that.
