This blood-red ale may not be what you might expect from a malty and hoppy craft beer. Evil Twin has a rich malt character, without being overly sweet. It has a huge hop character, without being overly bitter. It is a great example of a bold, rich, balanced craft beer, without being heavy and hard to drink in quantity. Our Evil Twin is only bad because it is too good to resist.

12 fl oz can at home, 6.8% canned 25/06/15. Very dark red or brown, small foamy tan head, light lacing. Aroma is earthy, cranberry, rye and spice. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is sweet and caramelly, spice, dried cherry, some seaweed notes, resinous with a balancing bitterness. Too sweet but it grew on me.

Can from work. Dark red. Pretty heavy, but seems like the heavyness and malt overpowers the hops. Wasn’t very refreshing. More bready and quite sweet. Doughy. Not fruity or crisp. Seemingly pointless.

Can. Dark amber color with a thick tan head. Plenty of sheet lacing. A pleasant aroma of citrus and florals with moderate malt. Taste is on the sweeter side, hoppy, and nutty. Good hop presence, but not bitter. Very smooth. Feels like it works as intended.

200th rating for this beer. Tap at Bainbridge BH. Dark brown with a dense beige head. Woody nose of hops and wood, resin, body bitter and clean, getting some black IPA chocolate clash. Light sweetness that lingers too much, touch fruity, don’t like the caramel. Smooth, moderately refreshing though heavy, clean, hoppy – craftsmanship is good but I just detest the recipe, right out of the gate.

Rubí limpio y oscuro con espuma marfil compacta. Aromas de malta caramelo y herbáceo. Cuerpo medio y maltosa. Sabor inicial maltoso, toffee, con sabor herbáceo y final de amargor seco.

Keg at Brewdog Shoreditch. A clear ruby brown colour with a fizzy beige head. Aroma of caramel, some toffee, pine, red grape, spruce and subtle peach, maybe grapefruit too. Taste of caramel, toffee, strawberry and a big hoppy flavour of grapefruit, peach, red grape and resin. Medium bodied and a slightly oily texture. A bittersweet, caramel finish with some resinous hop bitterness. Such a well balanced beer. Sweet caramel, toffee malts and citrusy grapefruit, resin bitterness. Good beer from this brewery.

Keg at PSBH, Manchester. Very nice dark red shade. Short head. Rings of lacing. Piney, caramelly and toasty. Fruity in a red grape and red apple sort of way. Very bitter and without much sweetness to balance that out. I like it but would appreciate a little more sweetness.

Bottling date of 05.18.15. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a nice looking dark hazy red almost brown color with a nice transparency about it. A one and a half finger-ed white to off white foamy head dissipated within less than two minutes. Yeah, that head really stuck around longer than a lot of other beers I’ve had. Nice! Lacing was somewhat thick and foamy. The smell started off with bitter citrus over bitter pine. Its sharp and strong and allows a nice little bit of caramel underneath to balance. The taste was mostly bitter with a nice underscore of sweet between the caramel and the hops. A light caramel to bitter citrus rind scores in the aftertaste and leads to a semi-dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly nice sessionability about it. Carbonation hits nicely as an American Strong ale - decent bitter harshness but still balanced by caramel sweetness to not be overly done. Overall, I say this was a nice beer, I’d have again.

Bottle. Pours a big old muddy pile of foam and ruby red gunk. This has an aggressively malty, caramel character, full of stickiness and heaviness. Chewy, chewy, chewy. (#6016, 8/4/2015)
