This a big, dark ale with a complex and rich chocolate and caramel malt character followed by a touch of warmth and light malt sweetness, leaving you ready for more after each shovelful. You will love this so much you won’t have time to dig a six-footer, so make it a Shallow Grave. We’re sure you’ll dig it.

22oz bottle. Pours a deep, dark chocolate-brown color; thin, light-tan head with modest retention. Loads of chocolate, nougat, cocoa, and caramel; hugely dense aromatics; plush. Creamy, medium-full mouthfeel; loads of mouthcoating milk chocolate, mineral bitterness, and layers of caramel beneath; a generously dense porter, with a modest core bitterness. Lasting finish: milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, and mineral hops.

In the glass it has an almost black color. Aroma of black licorice and alcohol. Taste is smooth with chocolate and oatmeal. As it warms up the flavors seem to increase. Good beer. .

A - Pours a dark black with a hint of brown and a finger of frothy chocolate head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lace. S - Aroma is full of deep roasted chocolate malts with some coffee some sweet caramel and a touch of lactose sweetness. T - Starts off with some rich roasted dark chocolate malts with some coffee and a bit of earthy hop. Through the middle some sweet caramel and a bit of hop bitterness and chocolate bitterness. The finish is a mix of roasted chocolate with a touch of sweetness and some coffee. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and roasty finish. D - Very drinkable. Really nicely balanced Porter. The chocolate and coffee flavors are near perfect and the touch of hop flavor is really nice.

650 ml bottle from Bev4less. Pours an opaque blackish-brown color with a small khaki colored head that recedes to a fine film. The aroma is rich with coffee, chocolate, dark fruits and roasted grains. The flavor is a big dose of chocolate with mocha, coffee, earth, nutty hops and roasted barley. The palate is full, smooth and creamy with lively carbonation. Finishes long and dry with lingering black barley. Overall: A very tasty concoction.

On tap at Gourmet Haus. Amazing chocolate nose. Pours opaque with big brown head clinging down sides. Great chocolate and coffee follows with a surprising medium mouthfeel. Falls off quickly but still tasty.

Bottle shared by a friend as part of the reprieve following the Hopsnobbery Collective’s first (and last) Crappy Beer Tasting on 2/29/12. Darkest brown pour with a thin tan head. Malty nose with dark fruit notes, along with chocolate and apple. Malty flavor with hints of apple and smoke before a boozy and roasty finish.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is sort of chocolate and malt. Near full bodied. Flavor is like dark milk chocolate, with some coffee, and a sort of sour mash burnt malt touch. The sour aspect seems to leave with time, and the coffee comes out more. Finishing dry and a bit earthy (heh heh).

On tap at Rubicon for beer week! Aroma is coffee mostly. The palate is thin and drinkable. I think this is better than Boulders porter, but not the best I’ve had. Burped really nice, but mostly hops from the ipas I was drinking. Flavor is also coffee dominated. Not bad at all...

Strong charcoal roast aroma and flavor, unbalanced by a thin body. Little to no caramel or sweet malt flavors. Lacks the balance and drinkability that usually characterizes a dry stout, and lacks the caramel and chocolate flavors sometimes found in a porter. Interesting flavors, but not very fun to drink.
