3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22oz bomber: This one pours a fairly opaque, inky dark brown color. There was foamy light brown head on it. It has a good nose. Chocolate, some sweetness and roasted malts. The taste is good. Some chocolate sweet malts, with some roastiness in the background. Some hops in the background just knocking down the sweetness, but just letting a little through. Some milkiness to the taste. Slightly more than medium bodied. Nice.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours an opaque black into the glass, with a solid tan head that diminishes to trace lacing. The nose is of chocolate, licorice, caramel and dark esters. Flavors are similar, with cocoa, licorice, burnt caramel, toasted dark fruits, and finishes with a heavy black licorice note. Round mouthfeel, semi-active palate and full body. Nice take on the porter; smooth, the licorice feel is very interesting and accepted. Silky with soft(-ish) carbonation levels, this is a welcome addition to my beer cellar.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cap explodes off; a waft of roasted carob, milk chocolate, liquorice and Dutch cocoa ensues - bullet lollies anyone? Into a snifter at cellar temperature it goes. After a frantic pour it actually settles quite still with the head depleting rapidly to a mere ring on the meniscus. The beer a midnight brown come inky black. The chocolate and liquorice of the aroma is truly amazing, tight, enticing. And then it falls flat a little. The nose is not complex and that is just it. The palate is balanced to the nines but it is just chocolate and liquorice from go to finish. Milky with a light hint of roast carob upfront, mid-palate, on the swallow and lingering in the aftertaste. Where’s the angst, the aggression, the Porter!? Medium to medium light and relatively smooth. Mineral-like and slightly chalky with just a faint whisper of burnt wood. Dry as it passes the tonsils harbouring the alcohol well. Highly drinkable but far too effortless for a strong Porter. Needs some funk and junk in the trunk!!! (65cL, Bottled 22/09/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Nose and flavor are both strongly dominated by licorice and burnt toffee, covering most all else. I suspect there is enough hopping to balance the syrupy elements that come across via mouthfeel, as the finish isn’t overly sweet, but the aforementioned dominants cover up most else in the profile. Maybe a little tobacco note, but hops and malts are lost. That said, this beer is well-balance and thus quite drinkable. I love licorice but for some reason do not always appreciate it in my beer, but this one is well-done. Not super-complex, due to strong dominant elements, but tasty and drinkable.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pitch black color. Dark brown head that quickly dissipates. THe nose is a wonderful melange of dark chocolate, dark fruit, a touch of molasses and liquorice. The mouth is medium body with lots of dark fruit, chocolate, a touch of oxidization due to the beer being one year old, but that actually works really well and adds a dimension. Big dark fruit lingering in the finish with some chocolate character playing in the background. This is a fantastic porter that really shows how different a stout and a porter are. Love this beer.

Overall nice. Everything works about this beer, but I feel it’s a bit too subdued.
