3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Nose and flavor are both strongly dominated by licorice and burnt toffee, covering most all else. I suspect there is enough hopping to balance the syrupy elements that come across via mouthfeel, as the finish isn’t overly sweet, but the aforementioned dominants cover up most else in the profile. Maybe a little tobacco note, but hops and malts are lost. That said, this beer is well-balance and thus quite drinkable. I love licorice but for some reason do not always appreciate it in my beer, but this one is well-done. Not super-complex, due to strong dominant elements, but tasty and drinkable.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pitch black color. Dark brown head that quickly dissipates. THe nose is a wonderful melange of dark chocolate, dark fruit, a touch of molasses and liquorice. The mouth is medium body with lots of dark fruit, chocolate, a touch of oxidization due to the beer being one year old, but that actually works really well and adds a dimension. Big dark fruit lingering in the finish with some chocolate character playing in the background. This is a fantastic porter that really shows how different a stout and a porter are. Love this beer.

Overall nice. Everything works about this beer, but I feel it’s a bit too subdued.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Shallow Grave pours from a bomber into my teardrop "porter" glass and I watch as the inky-brown liquid flows, the head rising almost as quickly as the beer. Topped immediately but impermanently with a huge and soapy, milk-chocolaty foam; the aroma is roasted coffee with a milky sweetness, like my old (looney-tunes!) Great-Aunt Pat used to think kids should drink their coffee. Yuck for coffee, great for beer!
The taste is somewhat sweet and layered over the bitter roasted malt; the flavor reminiscent of a chocolate covered coffee bean with a thin layer of dark caramel underneath. I’m finding the brew less textured than I appreciate, the medium weight a little lighter than I would prefer. A bit more heaviness would carry this off a lot better, I think, and more carbonation would be a key to making this perfect for me. Of course, this isn’t about me, just my opinions, so there you go.
The finish is short, mostly clean for such a heavy coffee flavor, and is not a bad follow through. Of course, as the brew warms, the aromas become more pronounced and that’s lovely, but I have to say that the carb disappears. Converse of the beginning. Hmph. I like it better cooler, so consider that.
All in all, a nice beer, not a favorite, but solid and not a brew I would turn down.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20

Pours tar black with aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and hint of smoke. Lots of roasted malt and chocolate flavor with just a hint of smoke. Excellent beer!

Shared bottle from Shig poured black with a tan head. Aroma had Carmel rosy smoky notes. Taste had a lot Biscuit toast with undertones of smoked malt. This was a good porter but it reminded me of surly smoke.

Bottle thanks to timfoolery shared with duchammer: Poured a dark brown to black with a tan/beige head. Aroma is shards of milk chocolate and malts. Taste is smokey malts, chalky, some light bitterness.

Everything a porter should be, dark and toasty, touches of chocolate, mild coffee bitterness. Smooth and easy to drink.

Bottle from cellarbrations super store hami hill. Pours a dark brown with a tan head leaving lots of lacing. On the nose straight from the bottle it's rich dark chocolate backed with roasted coffee beans. Fairly light bodied with moderate carbonation. Taste wise it's fairly bitter with plenty of chocolate, cacao, roasty and coffee notes. Great beer to sit back and sip on.
