Shallow Grave Porter is dark as night, perfect for a cool evening out in the woods. This a big, dark ale with a complex and rich chocolate and caramel malt character followed by a touch of warmth and light malt sweetness, leaving you ready for more after each shovelful. You will love this so much you won’t have time to dig a six-footer, so make it a Shallow Grave. We’re sure you’ll dig it.

650ml bottle from the wine emporium Brisbane, poured into a Trappist glass, aromas of chocolate and coffee, beige head with good lacing, very smooth and very easy to drink

Tap: black pour with medium-sized tan head. Aroma is chocolatety, caramel, light grain, and a bit of dusty wood. Flavor is creamy caramel with a bit of sweet chocolate, vanilla, a small hint of tart apple and some woodiness. Interesting flavors, rather easy drinking, with some alcohol heat on the back end. I like it.

Bottle. Pours near black with an espresso head. Aroma has chocolate and caramel along with a little bit of smoke. Taste is semi sweet with plenty of roast and and some bitterness. Good body for a porter with a slick mouthfeel that ends up dry on the palate. Better than I expected.

Very good porter. Chocolatety yet light bodied. Has a stout flavor but noticeably thinner ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle thanks to a trade. Pours a near clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has some musty dark grains and light chocolate with a bit of underlying toffee. Flavor has musty dark grains throughout the beer with a bit of sweet chocolate and caramel underlying.

Aroma of cocoa nibs, charcoal and dark grains. Solid black appearance with no foam. Moderate flavors of charcoal, coffee beans and dark grains. Not much other flavor going on. Overall, pretty decent at best. No complexity or anything that makes it special.

Dark as night, hints of mocha, love it. Shame it’s quite expensive, I’d buy heaps of it

In short: A complex roasted porter with good hopping. Very nice.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed when approximately 4 to 6 months of age. Bottle sent to me by oakbluff, thanks a lot Scott.
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Nose is has a pleasant rich toasted malt character as well has green herbal hops. Taste has succulent cereals, highly roasted and wrapped in luscious caramel, nice mocha, roasted cashews, burnt oats, notes of bakery chocolate. A decent amount of herbal-spicy hops that distracts the taste buds and washes the sweetness away. Lively mouthfeel with a big body and generous but never aggressive carbonation. Nothing original here but the execution is flawless, it is flavorful, a good complexity, a high drinkability factor. A 22oz that went down like a 12oz. Very much above average take on the style. Another nice bottle I got in a trade that was gathering dust in my cellar, I have way too much good beer in my cellar, so if you are reading this I hereby invite any ratebeerian passing through Montreal to drop by house and watch me drink way too much good beer.

Bottle at Leopold’s Gasthaus in San Francisco. Black with a good creamy head. Sweet, a hint roasty and smooth. Roast and light sweet sugar aroma. Quite deep. Goes down really well.
