341 mL stubby. Copper-brown with small head that quickly fades to a film. Aroma has traces of nuts and chocolate, but I get a little sewage in there too. Flavour is better, with bitter chocolate, dry toast, and coffee grounds. Some fruity esters on the sides of the tongue - not sure they belong in a dunkel. Not much hops presence. A little flat and metallic at the end. Decent, but Heritage has better products.

341 ml stubby. poured brown with no head. aromas are a little nutty, burnt hops, typical dark but very mild. flavours are a smooth blend of the aromas. easy drinking and boring.

[456-20070727] Sample @ LCBO-Summerhill. Sweet honeyed bread aroma, like candy. Clear, amber brown body with a quick off-white head. Mildly sweet initially, flavour has a malty background. Medium body, very smooth. Very nice, would repeat. (7/2/6/4/12) 3.1

[2508B-20091002] Tap. Grainy straw aroma has mild skunky straw fruit notes. Clear, amber body with a quick foamy off-white head. Strawberry straw grains flavour has a long sweet fruity finish. Medium body. Poor, unpleasant berry notes. (5/3/5/3/11) 2.7

Clear dark amber color, with a beige head, but falls quickly, light dark dried fruit notes, with some mild toasted malts, with a faint nutty and biscuity accent, a sublte spicy nutmeg in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a fruity, toasty malt character, with a biscuity note, a faint nutty accent, hint of toffee, with mild a dark dried fruity flavour, leading towards a malty, lingering hop bitterness finish.

The best Dunkel I’ve been able to find this side of the Atlantic. Not quite like a tall glass poured in a smoky German pub, but very nice regardless. And to think, after many months of looking (not knowing that the kind of beer I tried and loved in Germany is called a Dunkel), it’s brewed just down the road from me.

Brown body with light off white head. Light malt caramel aroma with a slight must. Light caramel hop flavour. There is nothing too over powering about this. Light hop dry at the end of the sip.

Sample at April 2007 Brewnosers meeting. Brown with a fizzy off-white head. Toffee and citrusy hop aroma. Light toffee flavours with a citrusy bitter finish. Light bodied, but still refreshing. Not a chance I dould have pegged this as a dunkel. Given the ramblings over at the Bar Towel about Heritage dumbing down Sargeant Major’s IPA, I wonder if they didn’t mix up a batch and bottle this as the Sarge, because it certainly could have passed as a dark and somewhat dumbed down IPA. In any case, it was decent.

Clear, dark amber color, no head, slight lace. Decent aroma with accents on maltiness slightly hoppy. Coffee / Chocolate presence with a hint of smoke flavor with smooth, lasting aftertaste. Nice finish, well rounded. Mealy consistency as mouthfeel. Not my style, but still virtuous.
