robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Jan 30, 2007 nice stubby bottle.
very dark borwn color, nice head.
aroma is piney, with a strong malt backbone. flavour is the same, pretty thin though.
nothing special really. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Jan 4, 2007 stubbie bottle sample- Pours deep chestnut/dark brown witha two finger frothy cap. Aromas are basically all about the malts, some vanilla, toasty and mild cookie. Very subdued malt character, with dry, toasty malts, and some dark bready flavours. Pretty thin and boring as a result of the lack of flavour. markas101 (541), Fargo, North Dakota, USA Nov 22, 2006 33cl stubbie, Shelburne. Pours very dark amber, head quickly disappears. Burnt malt aroma, sweet malty taste. Decent, although some European dunkels have more complexity. MarkoR (224), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 14, 2006 Pours a nice dark colour. Generous foamy head. Stubby bottle (a classic). Aroma of hops, toasted grains. VeloVampire (483), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 29, 2006 Updated: Feb 8, 2007341 ml stubby bottle - pours a clear light chestnut, with a solid though quickly diminshing head. Aroma of fruity hops with grapefruit notes most prevalent. Lightly hoppy mouthfeel, with some grapefruit again, as well as a faint metallic finish. Many similar flavours to Heritage’s superior Scotch Irish Sgt. Major’s IPA, though with less complexity in the body and a shorter finish. Not really a dunkel, seems more like a light bodied pale ale or something. If you’re going in thinking "dunkel" you might be disappointed, but if you have an open mind, you may be pleasantly surprised with what you find here. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 30, 2006 Light coffee darkish, lace in glass. Crowning head. Bit of chocolate malt aroma. Bit of taste though a lagerish one. Lower than average carbonation On the sweet side, very little bitterness. Summerhill LCBO Festival.
pootzboy (1037), Hawgville, Ontario, Canada Jul 26, 2006 Updated: Sep 23, 2006Retro stubbie bottle pours a light cola colored beer in the tumbler. Much lighter brown that the Dunkels I’m used to drinking.
Light nose....some sweetness, succulent fruits and a bit of toasted grain..not as malty-aromatic as a dunkel lager.
Moderate malt spine, slightly thin body, soapy mouth feel, sharp ale-like character.
You get some of the toasted malts and sweetness up front...but just for a second...then all this pale ale fruitiness from ale yeast and sharp citrus-cedar tastes from ale hopping kicks you in the palate..the finish is wet with an-ale like "bite" an more light fruit esters... then a bittering after taste. This is a dark pale ale?
This is no dunkel in any "traditional" sense... this is a dark-malted pale ale in taste and character and as such not a bad one...the brewer tells me that this beer uses the same California Common steam beer yeast as Anchor, and is fermented at warmer ale temperatures which produce the fruity esters.
So it appears what we have here is a unique hybrid beer...it’s either a dunkel steam beer or a dark cream ale...so in that respect the only "traditional" thing about this hybrid beer is the retro stubbie bottle. :-) mooser (13), Ontario, Canada May 4, 2006 Pours with tiny white head. Moderate hop floral, sweet earthy aroma. Refreshing. Nice bitter and nutty roast. It’s set upon a watery back drop.
