Draft.
Now, I am not a big fan of The Herkimer or their beer but I was there again and after drinking 3 glasses of water I broke down and got a beer. I guess it deserves a couple chances, right?
So I go for the Alt. Pours a reddish tan copper color with minimal head. The aroma is pretty underwhelming. Some malt notes and a touch of hops. The taste is really subpar as well. Starts with a sweetness and transitions to a somewhat bitter finish. What gets me is an offputting ending taste in the mouth after.
Medium mouthfeel.
Overall, not very good.

Shaker pint at the Brew Pub in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pour is a hazed copper ruby light brown with a smallish ecru head. Some lacing streaks the glass to the finish. Aroma of not too much initially, as it was served pretty cold. As it warmed I got some cherry fruit and toasted malt. The hops are present, and are of the grassy variety. Taste is sweet cherry fruit, with toasted malt behind it. The hops pick up in the rear, with mild grassiness. The taste overall has a weird sweetness to it, doesn’t seem quite to fit in. Palate is medium bodied, nice active carbonation and a crisp dry finish. Normally I really enjoy the Herkimer beers, but this was just ok.

Whatever. It’s okay but there’s nothing to it. It’s also strange they market this as their "pale ale" at the brewpub which technicallly may be true but the difference in style from the U.S. or British pale ale is worth highlighting, not blurring them together as if to prove a point. I think this perhaps minor issue points to the unremarkable character of Herkimer brews in general.
