COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Here is what brewer Peter Licht says about this brew: "There seems to be some confusion about what íale of the hermití is. It is not that our brewer lives in a cave,... Letís just say that he doesnít get out much. Alone with his beer, his thoughts turn inward and backward. What about the way beer used to be made here in the new world? Old methods, old hop varieties, oak-aged, complex, challenging...."

Found this at Fresnoís BevMo. Label was so worn, i wonder if this had been in a box/case that had traveled across the nation, more than twice, Iíve never seen such weirdly worn labels before. I decided to get it anyways.... Appearance, rather dark amber, kinda woody like ha Very thin head, not much lacing, off white head. Aroma, not much, some malt perhaps. Taste, not exactly like the DIPAís Iíve known, in fact Iím pretty sure this is mislabeled, Isnít this really just a barrel aged IPA [single]? Some wood, rather green like, some other interesting flavors in there however. Just not quite there, though... Someone described this as an English Strong Ale, not a bad description. Iíd try this again, but i wouldnít pay a lot for it. Seems like the Bevmo price was Ok... Interesting attempt however.

500ml bottle from Binnyís in Highland Park. Pours an unclear amber with an orangey head. Some spotty lacing. Aroma has sweet fruits, malt, a toastiness, some wood. Taste is of sweet toffee malts, some grapefruit, some grain, spicy pine and heavy resin. Somewhat dank and somewhat oak-y. Medium bodied with just a touch of alcohol presence. Finishes with length, and bittersweet. Interesting flavor, unfortunately not in a positive way. Decent, nothing more. 13.3

"an "amber ale" listed as a BSA on ratebeer for some reason, but listed as a wood-aged double ipa on the breweries site. kind of a poor example of any of the three. a little fruity, no belgian aspects. the wood either mutes the hops too much, thereís not enough, or itís a little old. an ok beer that i wouldnít seek out."

Sample at Tied House. The beer is a slightly hazy dark amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Hops, citrus and malt in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of piney hops, citrus and grainy malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a short resiny hops aftertaste. Average overall.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a perfect layer of fluffy foam head where as the liquid was a dark tea brown hue that seemed to glow. As for the nose, there was a delicate presence of caramel malt and a background of citrus fashioned hops. The flavor is crisp and has a nice balance to the grained caramel like malt and a taste of hops that are very different. Has a bready profile with perhaps a lurking touch of oats.

Pours a hazy brown color with some indistinct sweet aromas immediately noticeable. A little nutty and toasty with a very strong alcohol flavor. The faintest bitterness lingers afterwards.

Pours a slightly cloudy amber/brown color, very thin head. I love the aroma that is coming off this beer. Very sweet and malty with a hint of raw grains. The flavor is similar. It has a nice malty sweet finish. My only complaint is that itís fairly thin. Iíd like a little more body for this type of flavor, it feels kind of watered down. A decent brew. Nothing to write home about.
