COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Here is what brewer Peter Licht says about this brew: "There seems to be some confusion about what ’ale of the hermit’ is. It is not that our brewer lives in a cave,... Let’s just say that he doesn’t get out much. Alone with his beer, his thoughts turn inward and backward. What about the way beer used to be made here in the new world? Old methods, old hop varieties, oak-aged, complex, challenging...."

Bottle. An unclear, dark amber beer with a quite small, light beige head. Piney, citrus-peelish aroma with caramel maltyness. Seems to be a bit old this one. Medium body, quite dry, with flavors of caramel malts, citrus peel and some, but not enough, bitterness. Bitterness and caramel in the finish. Not very interesting this one. Not bad, but just uninteresting. 111105

Pours a slightly cloudy amber/brown color, very thin head. I love the aroma that is coming off this beer. Very sweet and malty with a hint of raw grains. The flavor is similar. It has a nice malty sweet finish. My only complaint is that it’s fairly thin. I’d like a little more body for this type of flavor, it feels kind of watered down. A decent brew. Nothing to write home about.

50cl bottle pours clear amber with copper hues and tan head. The aroma is an odd mix with sort of sour mash mixing with spicy oak followed by muted pine hops and aged malts. Hmm. The taste is a mix of grapefruit like hops, sour mash, spicy oak and then it gets a touch sweet with sugary maltiness. Into the finish mild fruity notes like a tangelo tang come to the surface.

bottle shared on 1/31/11 @ dak’s. clear. amber with a small ow head. odd nose... herbaceous, caramel, raisins, some pungent bitterness/wax and old malt powder. it tastes like old malt powder as well... along with some stale vanilla, caramel-ish, flowers and a slight bitter hoppy finish. it’s rather odd... not terrible but not good by any stretch. 5/3/5/3/11-
