MartinT (4345), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 20, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Spicy hoppiness and bold honeyed maltiness coalesce in this hefty, well-crafted Strong Lager. Although it has a higher level of residual sugars than I’d like in this broad style, I must say every flavor is well integrated and pleasant.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam clings to the clear golden.
-Alcohol is well hidden, only licking the finale.
-Maltiness is portly, offering both honeyed sweetness and biscuity crunch.
-That hoppiness is present throughout, although one could say it could have been more expressive. Maybe this bottle wasn’t fresh enough?
-The entire flavor profile is very clean.
Bottle.
Gar4016 (2), , Iowa, USA does not count Sep 1, 2008 I was exited to find an imperial pilsner at our local store, hmmmm.... Pours a deep golden color. Medium head dissipated shortly afterward. Smells of caramel and light hops. Taste a little hops to begin with, then syripy sweet caramel sugar, a bit too much in my opinion, followed by an equivalent stronger alcohol taste. This ends with a little bit of bittering hops at the end.
I think this Czech Imperial Pilsner could be much nicer if sweetness and alcohol could be toned down or complimented in a better way. Otherwise it’s an alright drinker. brentfeesh (910), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Aug 4, 2008 What did I ever do to deserve this kind of abuse? 750ml bottle. Produced in cooperation with DFH and Sam C.???? I don’t think I’d put my name on this. It looks nice when you pour it but heads straight down hill from there. This thing is a cloyingly sweet mess in both aroma and flavor. It’s syrupy, sticky, and metallic. The only way I was able to drink this was to blend it with an overly hopped homebrew that my friend made. Somehow it balanced it out and made it drinkable. Otherwise….Drain pour. hotstuff (3038), Indiana, USA Jul 31, 2008 Corked and caged bottle. Medium sized white head that was frothy and very fizzy when poured, spotty lacing, transparent, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a golden hue. The aroma was sweet, malt, hoppy, spicy, sugary, lightly floral, and some grassiness. The flavor was sweet, thin, spicy, hops, lightly bitter, and malt. Tingly, thin mouthfeel and medium bodied. Easy to drink, rather refreshing on a summer day, surprised at the low ratings, decent for the style IMO. sneagrams3 (1402), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jul 15, 2008 The Dan Journal #196. Tasted 7/10/08. 750ml cork and cage. Bright golden hue with a sparse head. Bready and caramel aromas with a touch of corn. Bright piney hop nose. Full bodied and super sweet. Smooth mild alcohol in the middle of the palate that increases as the finish lingers. Honey notes with a dry finish. Candy sweet and slightly off. But a fun drink! asedzie (410), San Francisco, California, USA Jun 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours golden with thin white head. Aroma has honey, dough, grassy hops. Flavor is sweet, sugary, slightly alcoholic, some light basement flavors, with slight herbal hop bitterness lingering in the finish along with a touch of alcohol. I liked the idea of a czech imperial pilsner and although the product itself falls just a little short of expectations, it’s still pretty good and actually is exceptional if it is held up to Euro Strong Lager standards as opposed to it’s american counterparts.
