COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: Made from wheat malt, barley malt, hops, orange peel and yeast. Belgian inspired wheat beer, beautifully yellow, with a rich fruity flavour and mild bitterness from orange peel.

I hear a loud and long PSSSSSST as I remove the cap, so when I start pouring I do it very carefully. Despite this I end up with a glass consisting of 10 cm of white foam and .2 mm of beer. Next try yields 15 cm of foam and 3 cm of beer, it’s improving! 10 minutes after I finally have a cloudy medium orange looking beer in front of me, crowned by a disappointingly short-lived head that doesn’t leave much lacing. Pleasant aroma that is quite spicy and citric, also yeasty and fruity with banana. The taste on the other hand is not that great. It’s lemony acidic with unpleasant sour yeasty stuff, and this intrusive sourness almost drowns the delicate and pleasant flavours. The finish is light bitter, but again, the sourness and acidity are the rulers of this brew. Is it supposed to be like this? Dry, lively carbonated and with a sharp and close to unpleasant mouthfeel and a light astringent finish. It doesn’t feel quite right. The nice aroma and the spicy, yeasty, citric flavours made me finish the bottle, though.

0.5l bottle. Pours a light hazy straw-orange body with a massive white fluffy everlasting head. Aroma is light banana, straw, some citrus, thin yeast and cloves. A good old wheat aroma. Body is medium, lively carbonated and it has an oily texture. A bit sharp on the first sip, quite wheaty and definitely some yeast here. Hints of cloves and mild ripe bananas. The finish is quite peppery and a mildly yeasty, leaving a mild orange finish. A nice organic wheat.

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. Brew #432. ABV is 5.6%. There has been a recipe change for this beer (message sent to admins), it is now a German-inspired Hefeweizen, not a Belgian-inspired Witbier. The recipe now seems to be much the same as their ordinary Hvedeøl, only with organic ingredients. Some sediment in the bottle. Cloudy pale yellow colour, huge white head. Distinct spicy aroma of cloves, also hints of banana and citrus. Refreshing flavour, not very sweet, notes of cloves again, hints of banana. Moderate hops. Highly drinkable.

Quick-review: A fruity nose with melon, acidic qumquat and a good malt profile. A creamy mouthfell with a little sweet finish.

22.04.2011. 0,5l Bottle. Vinmonopolet Haugesund. Bryg nr. 432. Golden orange colour with a very large and agressive white head. Very lively carbinated. There is so much carbonation that it is almost difficult to drink it. Ok. Aroma is wheaty with lots of aromatic hops. There is notes of Banana and apples maybe. Moderate bitterness. Good flavours but to much carbonation.
