COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Deep red color, spicy aroma, sweet with very well hidden alcohol. Best beer from Hertog Jan.

Not sure what all the fuss is about with this one. its closer to a mild than a Quadruppel, IMO. Dark brown with a red tint and a small beige, disappearing, lightly lacy head. Smells of dark malt with raisins lots of liquorish, faint roast, caramel, vanilla and figs. Alcohol is present. Medium to light thin body. Sweet liquorish taste dominates with alcohol and raisins. It’s sweet fruity taste seems sort of like a juice but heavier like a port or brandy. I didn’t find it that complex and clearly too boozy. Peppery. It left a gut rot in my tummy. Disappointed overall.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2013 Good beer! Nice smell, not too overpowering, no scent of alcohol, sort of a sweet malty smell that matches the flavor quite well. Pours a deep red, could not see my fingers on the other side of the glass when looking through from one side to the other. Not much head at all, almost non existent. Sweet rather thick sticky beer that hides it’s ten degrees of alcohol masterfully and leaves a wonderful aftertaste. A beer to enjoy! All in all a great one, much better than others I have tasted from the same brewery.

Poured a reddish brown with a frothy white head. Aroma of spice with dark berry fruit/ Medium body, flaour as per the aroma with the berry fruits dominant amidst some apple, and a dry, sweet aftertaste. Impressive.

Had this one after a Hertog Jan Karakter. The similarities are quite clear. It has that same sweet caramel / brown sugar base with spices like clove, but all more subtle and more balanced. It’s like a more aged Karakter somehow. It has a higher ABV, although you don’t get much of that. It’s still easy to drink, although not as easy as Karakter. Also i’m unsure i like this more or not. People probably will call this one more balanced. It’s not as sweet and less malts and yeast. This one comes with a mellow bitter hop kick to balance out the flavors better, but also making it somewhat more neutral. Also a bit thicker. It’s just the "sipping version" of Karakter. I like it, but it depends on the mood which one i prefer.

I like this strong heavy beer. It has a nice dark colour. And the stone bottle looks really cool. Besides that it also has a good taste. I can really enjoy this one. Don’t drink this one really fast but take the time! This beer is really nice with a good steak.
