Aromas of candy sugar, alcohol, raisins, bubblegum and brown sugar.
Flavours are kind of basic, with some spice and banana and chocolate. Very sweet, but still with some acidic notes.
A clean mouthfeel - quite crisp.

In short: A nice sweet fruity Belgian dark ale with good amount of woody hops. Good beer
How: Bottles 330ml. Consumed relatively fresh, a few months after purchase at the source in the Netherlands. Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Clear dark ruby body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Nose of typical a good yeasty belgian dark ale with dried dark fruits, woody hops and such. Taste is like a rich toffee coated fruit cake followed by a nice woody hops bitterness. The beer is actually very sweet but those woody hops really balance it out quite nicely. I enjoyed that beer and I’d like to score a few more bottles of if. I wish I had some Prestige. I really do. And I’d like to have some of this beer too.

Pours a cloudy brown color with a thin beige head. Appealing aroma of licorice, raisins, nutty malt, yeast and candy sweetness. Very good flavor of yeast, raisins, candy sweetness and malt. The body is medium with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation.

0,3 l bottle as a gift.
Deep amber-reddish colored beer with a small tan lacing head. Aroma of liqueric malt, strong alcohol, fruits like fig and raisins, minimal lurking hops. Medium bodied one with strong bit of alcohol, caramel and malt, sweet vinous fruity character of raisins, some spicy vanilla.

Bottle poured in glass. The Grand Prestige by Hertog Jan has a beautiful deep dark red colour reminiscent of a dark Bordeaux wine or perhaps even coffee. It has a thick dense yellowish-white head that disappears quickly even though a very thin ’head’ remains that covers the beer below. This beer is sweet and felt like cough syrup in my mouth. What surprised me was that there was not much carbonation going in the glass and thus I did hardly get any prickly feeling on my tongue. In the finish I did detect a tiny bit of bitterness on the back of my tongue. Overall the Hertog Jan Grand Prestige is clearly a quality beer. Still, in my experience, it is a bit one-dimensional in the sense that it is mostly the sweetness that comes through. The drinking experience is that of a very smooth beer and it is not offensive at all, something which I always appreciate. Would I buy this again? Perhaps, but I if I do, I am sure I will age it for at least a year or so. This is definitely a beer that gets better with age. The brewery claims that this beer will taste like Port wine when cellared for five years or so.

Dark amber body, big dark cream head. A little medicinal underneath a caramel and fruit front, but warming and reasonably enjoyable. Bottle.

33 cl bottle, Maastricht, The Netherlands. Deep amber, mixed floral yeast aroma. Balanced first sip, then some sweetness that slowly transitions to bitterness with a predominantly syrupy finish.
