3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JorisPPattyn (7308) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - OCT 29, 2004
Yellow-brown head, fast gone; very dark brown beer. Vinous nose, chocolate, dark malts and a bit of caramel, and then some sea-like smell - tar and iodium on the air. Initial sourish-bitter taste, becoming quickly sweet, with a bready flavour - like old dark bread left long in the mouth. Bit piney flavours, caramel and again some chocolate, bitter and sweet. Balance only settles after a certain time. Despite the heavy malt, a rather thinnish texture, with a velvety mouthimpression, covering light acidity. Almonds in the aftertaste. Not a bad beer, but the dark perfumed malts just overwhelm a bit too much. MF is neither of the best. Belgian strong ale? OK, but the brewery calls it barley wine (gerstewijn) on the label.

First impression is an almost creamy foam that disappears rather quickly. Not your standard Belgian Strong Ale, kind of a sleep-tight beer. Fairly strong mouthful, the alcohol is definitely there. Deep jewel red color, nice to look at, but it won’t be the first item in the basket on my next beer shopping.

The aroma is slightly sweet with notes of plums and other fruits. The color is a deep red and it has an OK but fast disappearing head. The flavor is a soft rounded sweet, fruit rich, complex one. Ending on a fruit rich dryness after a middle with a good sweetness. A fantastic beer.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 TheBeerGod (4633) - Newport News, Virginia, USA - JUN 3, 2003
Had this at Wildemans in Amsterdam on 5-24-03. Pours dark brown with a ruby red hint. Has a smooth tan head on top of it. Spice and malt sweetness in the nose. The taste reveals strong alcohol notes along with a more pronounced spicy tongue and introduces dark chocolate and nutmeg. Finishes well. Good beer.
