3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: APR 3, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle from Lowlander.
Quite amazed to realise I have not done this one already. Very sweet malty aroma but not sickly. Fair dollop of alcohol in there too. Awesome deep red / mahogany body. Not at all cloudy but such a deep colour it is almost opaque. Shame the head died. Lots of toffee and sweet malt in the flavour with a touch of vanilla and apple. Good palate. Finish is sweet, alcoholic and slightly nutty. A little bit on the swift side though. Characterful all rounder.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This trappist ale from the Netherlands poured a nice dark brown color with red tints and edges (dark brown-burgundy). The head was pillowy and significant and last quite well for somethin with such a high ABV. The aroma was complex (as was the flavor) with dark fruits, cherries, grapes, and some apples detectable. The flavor was much the same, but the alcohol came out too strong (very vinous). Spices also came through in the flavor, which was nice and not detected in the aroma. Mouthfeel was rather flat and this one was very malty thick. Maybe some age would have been a good thing for this one?

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Quite dark red colour with nice tan head, that left a bit of lace on the sides of the glass.
Aroma of very ripe fruits and walnuts as well as something very familiar, that I can’t quite put my finger on. Weird.
Mouthfeel is astounding this feels like drinking cream with just a tiny hint of prickling on the tounge.
Flavour is very fruity with notes of ripe apples and bananas. Quite sweet with practically no bitterness. Would probably work really well with sweets or desserts.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled (BB 12/2007)
Dark ruby color, small tan head. Aroma of plums, nuts and vinegar. Bitter-fruity flavor, plums and dates dominate. Long alcoholic bitter aftertaste, but body itself is a bit thin and watering down in the finish. Anyway one of the best or even the best of Dutch "main stream" beers.

Bottle. Vinous, peppery, sweet/malty aroma. Dark chestnut brown colour. Small, unstable, light brown head. Very vinous flavour. Also quite sweet. The mouthfeel is quite thin for its 10%. Peppery, but slightly disappointing aftertaste.
