3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
(Draught at ’t Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 31 July 2009) Dark ruby colour with creamy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of red fruit and roasted malt. Slightly vinous. Malty taste with red fruit, raisins, brown sugar. Roasted malt and caramel in the finish. Full bodied and fairly sweet with alcohol rather well hidden, coming through with some warmth towards the end. Tasty and warming beer in good balance. Very nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
One of the better beers you can buy in almost every supermarket in The Netherlands. Quite sweet, little bitterness. The alcohol is not overwhelming, but brings a nice warmth to the beer.

2.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Pours brown with no head at all. Malty aroma. Very sweet flavour with artificial caramel and way too much carbonation. Watery for a 10% beer. Not good.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark red with small beige head. Looks industrial, filtered. Fruity aroma with raisings and other dark fruits, some sweetness and a little bit of chocolate/coffee. The first impression is of a more potent and fruity schwartzbier, with the complexity coming after. The alcohol is present but not overwelming. Nice sweetness. Well balanced and interesting beer.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Dark brown with grey dense head. Aroma of dried fruits and plum. Very sweet flavour, almost sugarish and brandy like. Heavy on the palate too - a bit cloying in fact. Nah, not my favourite.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. A aroma like wine, a mixture of alcohol and malt, light fruity. The head is small, creamy and brown with a normal duration. The body is very dark red. The taste is very strong, very malty, some chocolate and pudding. The aftertaste is long and mild. The body is medium strong, creamy with a soft carbonation. A very good beer, so far the best beer from Hertog Jan.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
bottle - Pours dark amber with a thin, fizzy, off white head. The aroma is of malt and alcohol. It tastes of sweet malt with just a little dark fruit. There’s definitely an alcohol presence and it leads into a warm finish where the alcohol and maybe a little hops lingers on the palate. It’s lightly carbonated and medium bodied. It’s alright, but I expected better.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
50cl ceramic bottle poured into a Chimay Trappist glass. Dark amber brown with very little tan head. Nose is subtle, notes of fruit, licorice and alcohol. Flavor is anything but subtle. Very complex. It goes from sweet to sour to bitter. Dominant flavor is licorice with notes of alcohol and dark fruits. Medium finish is bitter.

Thank you Bernie. A bottle. Reminds me of an American made barleywine. Nice minimal use of hops in the right places. A warm fuzzy feeling with the 10% slightly hidden. Sweet with dark fruits- dates, plums. Good change of pace.
