3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
(50 cl ceramic bottle from Irma Axelborg; BBD: couldnít find but the product code is 04/14:53 024) Poured into a Rochefort goblet. Reveals a clear dark copper body with nice tan head that initially is about one finger thick but sadly dissipates almost instantly leaving only a thin film with small islands and some decent lace on the side of the glass. Aroma is banana and caramel. Oily texture, soft carbonation, full body and a sweet finish. Flavour has more caramel and the sweetness masks the alcohol to some extent Thereís an additional perfumed quality to the flavour a bit like brown sugar or something. Itís alright but I would have appreciated more complexity in the malt profile and itís quite a pity the head disappeared so quickly.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Deep dark colour with some ruby / garnet tinges. Short lasting yellowish white head with mild carbonation. Deep malts and chocolates with plum / sweetish notes. Nice alcohol warming effect on back palate. Beer lighter in body than expected but definitely a "drink again" beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Red tinted brown beer with a quickly lowing yellowish head. Big punch of malts and bonfire on the nose, with soft Madeira sugar and warm banana skin. It opens up to a beef stock and marmite aroma, all covered in thick marmalade. Very sweet but fresh enough on the fruits, which bodes well for 3-5 years aging. Gets a bit boozy but has enough aniseed and licorice flavours to balance out the heat. Very enjoyable.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Lekker ietwat zoet biertje dat er geen onduidelijkheid over laat bestaan dat er 10% alcohol in zit. Smaakt blijft lekker nabranden in de mond en keel.

Bottled. Sweet and spicy, with strong Belgian yeast presence. Nice enough, not up there with the best abts.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
"ZWAAR" is marked on the back label, which means íheavyí in dutch. And this beer is heavy, in deed. Itís a barley wine or, what I like better, a winter warmer. Itís not winter yet, still this is a beer to taste layed back with a lot of time. Pay attention not serving it too cold, you would destroy all itís aroma and taste. And that would be a shame. The bitter sweet taste warmes your palate with itís heavy alcoholic body. Just like anIrish coffee. And the taste of coffee beans and dark chocolate dominates this beer. For a beer of this alcohol percentage, the body could be richer and the aftertase better pronounced.
Dutch winters can be harsh. So you need something to warm them up. One possibility could be a Hertog Jan Grand Prestige. Surely not the best Barley Wine, but nevertheless a very good beer.
