COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

My wife surprised I bought this one has our backpacks were already heavy with goodness. The brewery lists this as a barley wine Spicy with well hidden alcohol notes and not very stellar. Page 226 of Michael Jacksonís Great Beer Guide only 370 out of his 500 Classic Brews to go.

Bottled. Pours brownish in colour with a medium sized head. Very fruity with notes of dried fruit, spices, caramel, syrup and yeasts. Somewhat thin bodied.

Bottle. Brown with beige head. Sweet banana aroma with honey, toffee, spices (some of it vanilla). Flavour is sweet with a clear alcoholic element, some fruityness along with spices and a little dryness. Weak palate though for my taste. I need more body (well, actually i donít - thereís already plenty of me, but the beer could have more in my opinion). The lack of body would probably make this go down easier with itís lasting burning sensation in the throat.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2008 (Bottled) Very dark ruby brown color with a medium, foamy and tanned head. Very syrupy-malty aroma with dried fruit. Extremely sugary-syrupy-sweet and malty flavor with lots of fruit and no sign of alcohol. Full-bodied, sticky-syrupy palate with low carbonation. Way too syrupy to be truly enjoyable, but at least it warms you up... (Bottled, 2001 vintage sampled 2008) Lots of rye-pudding, dried quite a bit from the fresh version. Toffee, anise, alcohol slightly more pronounced as aged, but not disturbing. Reminds me of Rochefort with less anise-herbiness. Nice. 8-4-8-4-15=3.9

750ml bottle, gift from Dalle (thanks). Best before 11 Dec 2006, consumed quite by chance on 11 Dec 2006! Very dark red colour with a vanishing beige head. Plummy, slightly tart, fruit on the nose. Some musty, woody edges and a whiff of pear drops. Lots going on in the flavour department. Dry malt, bitter cherries, liquorice, medicinal accents. Again a woody undercurrent. Somehow, though, the flavours donít seem that rich and deep. Overall, thereís a bittersweet character. Medium bodied, with a big alcohol burn on the way down. Not as forceful or powerful as one might expect from a beer of this strength and deceptively easy drinking (apart from the alcohol burn).

(30 cl bottle) Sweet damp scent. Dark red color, tan head. Almond and alcohol taste. Lots and lots of warming alcohol. Not very pleasant, too much noticable alcohol.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2007 Tasted this at the brewery tour and have few bottles to make another taste. It was quite full, sweet and a little fruity. Maybe too bananish for me. New note after a second tasting: Very metallic taste and maybe alcohol was pushing a little thru. Also quite little carbonation.

More like a barley wine, I would say. Beige head. Smells of alcohol, but the taste is full and round. Lots of sweet aroma, packed with fruit. Deceivingly easy-drinking!

Low head on a brown body. A very rich brew, meaning itís full of taste coming from its ingredients. Spices; fruits are nicely interlaced in its tste, and it leaves a very nice aftertaste. A beer I would enjoy any time.
