4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Consumed at Nederlands Biercafe t’Arendsnest. This dark brown ale pours with a short light brown head, eliciting a very strong aroma of malt. The flavor is initially sweet, with a slightly bitter finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Wonderful molasses and raisin nose, dark brown color, low foamy head. Very sweet - like brown sugar with some toffee. Unfiltered tobacco residue that lingers on the tongue. Heavy taste with a medium body. Alcohol not as present as you’d think. Overall too sweet but I liked it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled: Clear burgundy colour. Light brown small head. Aroma is fruity, sweet and alcoholdense. Malt, alcohol, fruit and some spices dominate the flavour. Ends on a fruity alcoholnote. Very warming on lips and palate. Quite good, but alcohol a little to dominant for my likings. Take some of the subtleness out of the beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled sampling but served in the appropriate Grand Prestige chalice. Strongly vinous aroma, the red grape standing out prominently along with a touch of malt sweetness and plum. Deep, dark garnet color, filtered, with a slight, fine head forming a ring around the edge of the glass. Red grape juiciness and fruit carry the flavor profile almost singlehandedly, a bit of brown sugar and acidity making themselves known along with some light, estery yeast towards the finish, which is lushly warming and alcoholic. Very little hop presence here, seemingly, perhaps being only responsible for a tiny amount of bitterness late. Palate is quite smooth, effervescence is low. Body is undeniably full. An appropriate after dinner choice (digestif), also seems like it would fit nicely in front of a fireplace in winter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Yellow-brown head, fast gone; very dark brown beer. Vinous nose, chocolate, dark malts and a bit of caramel, and then some sea-like smell - tar and iodium on the air. Initial sourish-bitter taste, becoming quickly sweet, with a bready flavour - like old dark bread left long in the mouth. Bit piney flavours, caramel and again some chocolate, bitter and sweet. Balance only settles after a certain time. Despite the heavy malt, a rather thinnish texture, with a velvety mouthimpression, covering light acidity. Almonds in the aftertaste. Not a bad beer, but the dark perfumed malts just overwhelm a bit too much. MF is neither of the best. Belgian strong ale? OK, but the brewery calls it barley wine (gerstewijn) on the label.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
First impression is an almost creamy foam that disappears rather quickly. Not your standard Belgian Strong Ale, kind of a sleep-tight beer. Fairly strong mouthful, the alcohol is definitely there. Deep jewel red color, nice to look at, but it won’t be the first item in the basket on my next beer shopping.
