Bottle. Pours an unclear red color with a one-finger beige head that disappears fast. Aroma of malt, caramel, dark fruits and sugar. Taste is of malts, caramel, dark fruits, chocolate and oak. Medium body and low carbonation. Starts out sweet but the finish is bitter, oaky and a bit tart. Complex and very tasty.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a very dark, crystal clear copper body with a small, beige, short-lived head. Strong, malty, sweet and sugary aroma of caramel, dark dried fruits and Belgian yeast. Also notes of brown sugar, anise and herbs. Strong flavour of sweet caramel that dominates the profile from start to finish. In addition I get Belgian yeast, brown sugar, herbs and alcohol. Very sweet taste and a light to moderate bitter, long-lasting finish. Full body, syrupy texture, moderate carbonation. A tasty brew if you like really sweet stuff. And some extra points go to the lovely ceramic bottle.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
From old notes, tasted with Curtis and some friends in Nashville, probably some time near the summer of 2012, from a bottle. Pours clear auburn with a thin beige head that leaves very thin lace. The nose is sweet, very toasted malty, with some raisin and caramel. The flavor is sweet caramel malt with toasted bread and some raisin, plenty of alcoholic heat. The body is full with lively, stinging carbonation, and a long raisin and lightly nutty caramel finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: OCT 6, 2014 Bottled in November 2013, drunk mid-September 2014. 50cl bottle poured into tulip glass. Dark brown beer with minimal to absent head. Pretty low carbonation and slightly creamy texture. Aromas of chocolate, brown sugar, bit of oak, dried fruits and caramel are present. Smells quite loveable actually. Taste is pretty sweet and lightly bitter. Bit warmish in the aftertaste, which lasts not that long. It is mainly the sweetness that survives. Overall, the beer suprised me in a positive way. It is quite nice to drink, but maybe a bit too sweet and less ’alcoholic’ in the aftertaste. Nevertheless, the beer is pretty well-balanced. I wouldn’t hesitate to drink it another day.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
30cl bottle, pours a dark red with a lasting fine tan head. Nose is burnt caramel, tart red fruit and a touch of earthy wood, body is rich and syrupy at first, swiftly turning dry-bitter and faintly tart with plum notes. An alcohol warmth joins lingering dry-bitterness and candy sugar in the finish.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Classic Dutch ’massive ale’, dark, with malty profile, candied fruits, explicitly sweet taste, bit cloying even, yeasty, agreeable spicy notes, quite complex, warming finish. I liked this years ago but I’m not sure how it evolved since then, viewing the fact that Arcense is owned by AB InBev - time for a re-rate.
