4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2012
2012-11-08, bottle at Locus Publicus, Rotterdam, 7-5-7-3-15=37
Dark mahogany color, nice red reflex, generous creamy head. Mild aroma of malt caramel and smoke. Good malty flavor, caramel, medium mellow sweetness, light bitterness. A bit nutty.
Not complex but enjoyable.
2002-09-12, bottle conditioned, 8-5-8-4-16=41
Dark brown, wonderful creamy head, generous. Nice malt aroma, deep; roasted malt, chocolate, some liquorice, alcohol. Really strong flavour, mouthfilling, maybe too much alcohol; a lot of malt, some sweetness, a reasonable taste of roasted barley, some liquorice. Not complex, just strong character. Reasonable bitterness, the minimum for this strength and malt.
Not my top beer, but maybe my Dutch favourite.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bought a bottle at the supermarket. The beer is dark brown and has a cream colored head, CO2 level is good. In the aroma tones of roasted grains, coffee, mokka and bananas. The taste is soft sweet but not bothersome. The alcohol provides the bite and mocha / coffee give fullness. The finish gives a slightly bitter aftertaste with a nice full mouthfeel. A really nice quadrupel, but La Trappe is just a little better.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Beer is looking good, nice amount of foam that sticks pretty long. Fruity aroma some caramel. But then the taste... wow, it ain’t get better then this! What a rich taste. Bitter but sweet, strong in alcohol but easy to drink.
All pieces fall in place for this beer. Don’t drink it to cold that will spoil the beer.

Donkerrood/bruin van kleur, weinig koolzuur, goede laag schuim. Ruikt zoet. Smaakt erg zoet maar drinkt lekker weg. Tamelijk zwaar.

Bijna zwart van kleur en zeer zwaar van smaak. Niet veel smaakdiversiteit maar extreme smaakdiepgang. Geen licht beginnertje! Vrij zoet en helemaal geen bittertje te vinden.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Fruity aroma with caramel, nuts and bread. Clear brown with frothy large lasting head. Powerful taste of rye bread, caramel, coffee and nuts. Medium body with creamy and sticky texture. Soft carbonation but maybe the alcohol is too much in focus in the finish.

I’ve been in the beer basement of Hertog Jan today in Arcen. Had a 2013 sample of the final 75cl bottle, pretty ok but nothing impressive. However, we had the great opportunity to share a bottle of 2005 that has been in the basement for so long. I already heard that the taste would be like a wine/port and so it was. Smelled just like a red wine, very warm and strong! Tasted, WONDERFUL, top of the bill for sure. There’s definately a good signature of beer in there, but it’s transformated into a more full, warm red winey flavour. If this would be a freshly beer that was easy to get, I think it would be leading the scores of this whole website (even better than rochefort, st bernardus abt, rochefort 10 which I’ve tasted multiple times). So if you can get this somewhere, take a couple of bottles and hold it for at least 5-10 years. I will never forget this beer!
