COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

"ZWAAR" is marked on the back label, which means ’heavy’ in dutch. And this beer is heavy, in deed. It’s a barley wine or, what I like better, a winter warmer. It’s not winter yet, still this is a beer to taste layed back with a lot of time. Pay attention not serving it too cold, you would destroy all it’s aroma and taste. And that would be a shame. The bitter sweet taste warmes your palate with it’s heavy alcoholic body. Just like anIrish coffee. And the taste of coffee beans and dark chocolate dominates this beer. For a beer of this alcohol percentage, the body could be richer and the aftertase better pronounced. Dutch winters can be harsh. So you need something to warm them up. One possibility could be a Hertog Jan Grand Prestige. Surely not the best Barley Wine, but nevertheless a very good beer.

Bottle from Liquor Mountain. Deep ruby with small beige head. Aroma has plums, loads of alcohol and some soy sauce. Not too heavy, perfect winter beer.

Clear, dark brown. Tiny, offwhite head. Aroma has dried fruit, figs and prunes, brown sugar and alcohol. Malty flavour with more brown sugar and fruit. Light spicy and sweet finish.

30cl bottle from somewhere online! Pours a deep ruby red colour with a pale beige head. Aroma of plums and cherries, also very obvious in the taste. Very full flavoured and rounded, maybe a little thin, body-wise but still an impressive beer. Quite boozy and warming.

50 cl. keramik flaske. 10 %.

0.33L bottle. Pours clear deep mahoganey with a thin tan head. Aromas are all malt: caramel, brown sugar, some butterscotch. Flavor is quite sweet, with lots of brown sugar coming through at the beginning. Transitions to some herby hop and roasted malt bitterness. Full body with a sticky mouthfeel and active carbonation. Overall, this beer is all about the malt. It’s sweet, uncomplicated, but balances off well-enough, and is pretty dern tasty.

30 cl, flaske, 10,0 % ABV, købt i Den Belgiske Ølbutik i Vanløse, 16. oktober 2014.
