Hertog Jan is a brand for beer lovers with an appreciation of natural, tasteful beer. This is a fruity aromatic bottom-fermented pils characterised by a golden color, full body and pleasantly bitter aftertaste. It should be served at 4 to 6C (39 to 43F).

UPDATED: APR 7, 2016 The beer has a simple pilsener appearance. The beer is crystal clear and has a golden yellow color. The beer forms a minimal foamy head. The foam is white and rough and collapses quickly. The beer has a nice pilsner aroma and taste. I smell a nice hoppy bitternes and a normal malty pilsner aroma. It is not very special, but definitely not bad. It is just a nice pilsener. The body is light and the beer has a thin feeling. The carbonation is average, which makes the palate not very special.

Helder geel bier met schuim. Een erg goede pilsener, zacht van smaak en toch pittig. Behoort tot de betere in Nederland.

The back label teaches us, that this beer is a Pilsener. Sorry guys, but I don’t agree. This is a very good and pleasent Lager. Sure, it’s brewed with Saaz hops, but it’s too descent to be called a true Pilsener… On the other hand, this beer has much more character than other Dutch lagers. The full maltyness in combination with this descent hop taste make this beer easy to drink without giving the beer lover the idea that it’s just colored water. Accessable without dividing, I would say. Pleasant and rich taste. This beer is not afraid to show a bit more character than most other Lagers (I wouldn’t speak of a pure Pilsener…).

On tap from a PerfectDraft machine. Clear golden colour with a nice white head. Malts, cereals and light caramel in the aroma. Average carbonation and light body. Taste is light with some bitterness towards the finish. Overall, a nice refreshing beer.

Cans grabbed in a hurry in an Amsterdam Supermarket. Stella is the nearest reference point, but maltier and with more body.

Keg at the Tulip Hotel bar, Bodegraven cos I can’t stop fucken ticking, 27/09/14. Clear golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pale malts, straw, cereals, paper, light caramel. Taste comprises pale malts, more paper, straw, light caramel, hint spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough for style.

0.33L bottle. Clear pale with a thin white head. Aromas of bready malt, slight bubblegum, sulfur, minerals. Flavor is mild sweet with some nuttiness and cereal grain, but then quicky to herby hops that grow, developing into a mild, dry hop linger. Light body with a thin mouthfeel and active carbonation. Overall, drinkable, but not noteworthy. Standard continental lager.
