A pretty nice stout. I enjoyed the rye spice addition. It really balances the rest of the stout. Good roast coffee notes abound. Good viscous balance.

Growler from Hess. Tasted it on nitro and thought it was better that way. Non-nitro pours black with a brown head. Coffee, toffee and chocolate on the nose, taste follows; has a dry, rye finish. Good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Damico (1977) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 14, 2012
Pours unclear dark coffee in color with a small tan head. The aroma brings smoky barbecue notes and a little brown sugar and soy. The flavor brings a sweet and potent imperial stout roasted malt base on a thick but smooth body. The rye flavors are lightly in there which I enjoy on the palate being more subtle.

Draft at Hess. It pours black with a brown head. Notes are rather sparse on this one, but I wrote down that it had a toffee and applewood smoked meat aroma with a similar taste and more coffee and toffee near the finish. I enjoyed this one.

Tap at Hess Brewery. Black pour with a brown head. Intense roasted malt flavor. Heavy body. Reminds me of Great Divide’s Yeti Stout.

Tap at Hess. It pours very dark brown, with a thin tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, coffee, chocolate, liquorice, smoked cheese and ham. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, umami aspect, leather, smoked ham and cheese and caramel, with a long dry-roasted finish. Over-all it’s pretty savoury. Full body and moderate carbonation. An interesting brew.
