COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A very drinkable, high gravity, crisp and spicy rye IPA, hopped generously throughout the brew process and then dry-hopped with over a pound per barrel of Sterling and Chinook hops. Earthy and spicy notes from both the hops and the rye malt, complimented by the floral and piney aromatics.

A steady pour into my Spiegelau IPA glass produces a two finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is aclear, deep amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, bright copper hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells floral, like tropical fruit notes, and some spicy, pine like character. Earthy, whole grain notes accentuated the spicy notes from the hops; bits of pepper, perhaps some cedar, and definite pine are each noticeable. There is a touch of caramelized malt character, and some toasted whole grain notes as well. This has an interesting herbal spiciness to this beer, and it gets more so as it warms up.

The beer tastes quite dry, which accentuates the spiciness, herbal, and woody notes of the hops. The body has quite a bit of texture to it, viscous, a bit on the chewy side, but the beer has very little sweetness to it. There is a spicy floral character here, as well as lots of spicy pine notes, peppery, herbal character, and touches of tropical fruit that leans towards guava, passion fruit, and kumquat zest. The fruit character gets a bit more pronounced as the beer warms up, though it is still not quite as expressive as I would prefer. It tastes a bit like watered down citrus juice at times. At times it has a nicely dank, herbal character to it that is accentuated by the supporting grain notes. The grain contributes a whole grain, and lightly toasted character to the finish, though this melds in with the dominant hop character.

Not bad, but doesn’t have the tropical fruit character that I would have preferred, and it leans a bit too much to the dry, herbal, and spicy side of things.

From San Diego. Smells of big floral/citrus hops, juicy and bitter. Starts out very fruity - pineapple and mango and citrus - but becomes more malty as it warms up. Tastes of spicy malt and quite bitter hop with dry fruity finish. Body is medium and slick. Very tasty (though I don't know that I would've pinpointed the rye on my own) and drinkable.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2014 Can from Bottlecraft in SD at home. Bright translucent golden pour with thin creamy head. Looks great. Aroma is mango and pineapple - yum. Taste is similar but lighter than you'd think, despite being, as it says, high gravity. Good bitterness too. Nice palate - heavy enough and a smooth foaminess. Very pleasantly surprised.

On tap at The Beer Company. Lasting head and lacing. Orange amber, very faint aroma, rye sourness and hop bitterness both catch your attention, and there seems te room on the palate for both. Interesting beer.

The description about it being very drinkable is spot on. Not an overwhelming hop portfolio. If it wasn't clocking in at 8%, it could be an all day sipper ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16oz can pours with a crystal clear gold body that has thin copper hues and supports a dirty white head of foam. The aroma offers up grapefruit, tangelo, a bit of mango and spicy hops with a decent degree of malty sweetness in the background. The taste quickly gets into juicy citrus that’s grapefruit, tangelo and tangerine like hop flavor. It then picks up bits of mango mixed with spicy near onion like hoppiness and some bitter hop resin. The resiny hop edge doesn’t fit in all that well with the juicy fruitiness but this doesn’t distract much from this being just a tasty IPA.

Can poured into SN pint glass. Nose is bready with rye coming through. Hazy light orange. Flavor is a little off target for me, kind of has that dusty flavor which I’m not fond of. Nice body, but the after taste is just not what I prefer. I had the other canned Hess IPA but don’t think I rated it, I liked that more.

Poured from a can. Hazy amber. Off-white head with fairly well retention. Aroma of pine and something else that I can't quite put my finger on. Taste of grapefruit with the spiciness added from the rye. Lingering aftertaste. Would drink again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
