Mandarin, honey. Quite dry and bready, feels a bit lager’ish, not sweet, dry peppery finish. Quite refreshing but a bit light overall.

Draught @ Mike Hess North Park, San Diego, CA

Pours clear golden with a small head. Aroma of orange fruits, lemon and citrus. Taste is smooth, sweetish with some honey, orange peel, citrus and yeast. Finish is sweetish, stuffy and fruity with some orange peel and citrus. Decent, quite easy going.

Draught @ the brewpub, San Diego. Aroma has honey, some apricot and mild fruity notes. Flavour has minerals, honey, some odd chlorine vibes and cereal. Finishes with some lingering hoppiness with minerals. These honey beers are still not my thing. This is not oversweet but stickiness eats the drinkability.

Can into pint glass. Appearance: hazy pale yellowish gold. Minimal head. Aroma: soda cracker biscuit malt, yeast, hints of orange peel and honey. Taste: lots of honey sweetness almost overwhelming, little bit of Belgian yeast. Palate: sticky, wants to be refreshing, but the honey sweetness just overpowers. Good beer, not great.

Can from Tanakaya. Drank straight from the can. Light wheat aroma with a strong orange blossom honey nose. Taste is more of the same almost with an orange ceylon tea character with the spice and orange peel. Finish is has some coriander and light cardamom. Not a fan.

Can - pale brew with white head. Light bready nose with a hint of orange. Honey comes through on the taste. Lawnmower beer for sure. Not as smooth as I remember on tap but still better than many.

July 10th, 2013 - Hess’ Jucundus is another spring and summer time flower ready to blossom as the temperature rises. It’s a slightly foggy beer, and by the time I took my review photograph the head had disappeared. But so had half the beer, so there might be a nice cap on this beer when it’s poured, though I couldn’t possibly comment. The aroma leads with orange zest and mesquite honey, but subtler notes of peach and creamsicle round out the softer sweet side. The flavor is more forceful with a semi-assertive carbonation,, and the bitterness of orange pith. The aftertaste is also sweet with a basic orange and citric sugar, and the aftertaste reveals a background noise of wheat and grain. It’s a refreshing and sweet journey, and especially apt for the boiling atmosphere inside Hess’ tasting room in North Park.

Slightly hazy pale burnished, gold off white lacing. Stale, slightly minerally paper nose. Lively carbonation, sweet weetabix , satsuma, watermelon, thinking brief finish...moisture wicking. Sweet honey.
