COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
For this sweet flavoured and dark brown beer,we use aromatic malt (for the dark colour). For abbey beer, Kapittel Pater has rather low abv (6%). The hop we use is Poperingse hop which has only a light bitter taste.

!My label says 6.0%! Orange-brown, hazy. Abundant, yellow, very irregular head, collapsing. Nose gives caramel-malt, biscuits, sweet, candi-sugar, honey, leather. Hint of bitterness immediately overwhelmed by very sweet taste, acquiring a liquorice-character, not outspoken. Tastes a bit artificially sweet, precarious balance. Carbonation seems to have been knocked out by pouring. Medium-thick mouthfeel. it seems to point at better - to the Prior of the same range, perhaps?

I like the flavor of Van Eecke's brew. It has a special flavor, perhaps from the hops? It is not metallic, but something I can't describe, try it. The pater is sweeter than the others.

This is a good quality brew, not an excellent one. The Sint Bernardus is better.

Bottled. Pours hazy burgundy. Aroma of drued fruit. Complex flavour - caramel, raisins and even coffee. Dryish, but sweeter than their Prior, and also lighter in body. Still it's malty, and with a pleasant soft mouthfeel. The finish is bitter and hoppy.

Bottled. Red-brown colour. Yellow head. Malty and spicy aroma. The flavour is amazing by it's simpleness. Has a flavour between the best pilsener and a great abbey-beer.

This one poured off of draft at Lucky Baldwins with a light goldeny blond color and thin foamy white head. The aroma was spicey enough to singe my nose hairs. It reeked of alcohol, oranges, yeast, and heavy spices. The taste begins with a lemony orange citrusness with heavy emphasis on the bittering and souring ending. This reminded me of sucking on an orange with yeast spices on it. Medium carbonation, but nothing rather spectacular. The citric acids and spices clash and sort of killed this one for me.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2003 draught: Golden color with a thin sheet of froth..spicy orange aroma..semi-full bodied with alcohol, orange, yeast, metal, coriander, banana, and more orange flavors..Citrus builds and combines nicely with the yeast..acidic finish..subtly bitter and yeasty in the ending too

Citrus and sugary nose. Light brown ,unstable creamy head. Somewhat yeasty, citrus a bit bandaid. Weak palate, quickly forgotten.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2003 Cherry and cinnamon aroma, compareble to Kapittel prior, only less prominent. Sweet taste with tropical fruit, cherry and cinnamon. A bit thin. Assertive beer, more a Flemish brown than a abbey ale. Re-rate from tap: cafe Morshuis Albergen. Light and fairly thin, also light-colored, almost amber. Lovely buttery flavor with milk chocolate and caramel. Goes down easy.

A light brown beer with no head. The aroma is an OK fruity ale aroma. But the flavor is much more powerful, with a nice sweetness of a great maltblend and with only a slight bitterness. A really good beer - next time I don’t want to share it.
