This dark beer has been brewed with careful attention in accordance with our age old brewing tradition. It is a flavourful beer, tasting slightly bitter-sweet.

Clear brown colour with a clear head. Candy, roasted malt, a nice soft finish where the 9% shine through. A very good belgian beer for these cold days

Pours clear amber-brown with a fat finger of light beige head diminishing gradually to a thick cap, no lacing. Nose is brown sugar, dark fruit and cloves. Taste is moderate caramel malt sweetness and mild spice, slight sourness and hop bitter. Medium to full body and soft mouth feel with alcohol warming on a slightly tart finish. Well, thatís all right. Sure, Iíve had better priors, but I donít think Iíve had better for the price. Really the major problem with this one is the near-complete absence of any hop character to balance out the sweetness. Not that the sweetness is overwhelming, and there is some tartness offsetting it, as well as the alcohol drying, but a little more bittering would help the overall balance. That said, being a monk might not be so bad if this were the daily drink.

UPDATED: NOV 8, 2015 The ímassive aleí, or abt as the style is called here, in this series. Dark brown colour, light beige head; brown sugar, cinnamon, candied figues, coriander and cloves in the nose, taste a spicy sweetness, soft mouthfeel with caramelly malts and lots of alcohol in the finish but nothing obnoxious. Not a great example of its style, but honest and enjoyable nevertheless. Also sold on 75 cl and probably harbouring a lot of ageing potential, as was proven by a vintage tasting at Kulminator, shared with Tim Webb and Craftmember; in this form, this beer had become truly great, with a pleasantly earthy quality to it, absorbing the sherryish oxidation surprisingly well. I take this tasting into account for rating this. Highly recommended and clearly underrated here.
