500mL bottle. Poured medium golden with a short, well-retained off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasted honey and bready malts with light fruit and perfumey accents.. sweet and strong, just as expected. The flavor found peppery spicage on the tip of the tongue, with warm corn and bready sugars behind.. black pepper and herbal bitterness around.. finished spicy with decent balance. Medium-bodied with low-moderate carbonation on the palate.. spicy.. decent stuff.

Hevelius Kaper has a thin, soapy, off-white head and a semi-clear, somewhat bubbly, orange appearance. There is not much lacing here. Aroma is mild, but one can detect some bread and a little molasses. Taste is of brown bread (think Roman Meal brand), caramel, sweetness, and a decent underneath hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Hevelius Kaper finishes pretty crisp, mostly dry, and surprisingly easy drinking. This is so different from high-gravity American lagers. I think it is very good, and I recommend giving it a try. RJT

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours burnished light copper with a beige or off-white head. Light malt aroma accompanied by light pitted fruit and a hint of noble hop. Med + body. It’s a bit slickish. There’s a trace of heat. Flavor is somewhat bready with a touch of spicy hop. Small touch. Still, there’s not a trace of fusil oils, so this is not one of those sickly high gravity beers. It definitely deserves respect. Finishes with enough hop to make it slightly bitter.

Swaroga (1385) - Brussels, BELGIUM - AUG 12, 2012
50cl bottle. Filtered, golden with small head. Nose : strong alcohol aroma that reminds that of a vodka. Peach esters, a bit of caramel. Sip : water like body, creamy texture, decent carbonation. Sweet with strong alcohol and ester notes. Some bitter hops in the end, the aftertaste is long with sour esters and some honey with hops. Overall it’s really heavy and I could easily suspect they added some vodka in it.

Amber golden, puffy white head. Aroma is metallic, syrupy, rough. Taste is again brutally sweet, bready, syrupy, and just no good.
