thebeertourist (1804), Oslo, Norway Apr 4, 2008 Bottle. Cloudy, pale yellow with a thick head. Strong banana aroma with undertones of clove. Banana flavours dominate. Body could have been fuller. Overall a decent weizen. BückDich (4540), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 8, 2007 Draft @ Popeye’s: Hazy blonde, light head and lacing. Nose of funky wheat, yeast and some chewy malt. The flavor is chewy, but it’s more wheat than yeast. Like an american wheat. The finish is nice, decent beer. MartinT (4345), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 2, 2007 My Bottom Line:
This citrusy Hefeweizen is another fine example of Hidatakayama’s propensity for quality, genuinely delighting with its banana esters, herbal hops and idiosyncratic yeastiness.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A fluffy head of foam decorates the cloudy beige yellow for the duration of the glass.
-The soft, big-bubbled carbonation increases drinkability while never restraining the flavor profile.
-Some tropical fruitiness is also expressed by the weizen yeast.
-This one came in second in a Hefeweizen taste-off at Popeye’s, after Fujizakura’s masterful take on the style.
On tap at Popeye’s. Capa (738), Yokosuka, Japan Apr 28, 2007 Draught at Popeye’s. Poured hazy yellow with a nice white head. Aroma was fruity, wheat, yeast, banana, and citrus. Flavorful and refreshing. Very fruity, banana, yeast, wheat, bubblegum. Had a light, crisp body. Enjoyable. larsga (2149), Oslo, Norway Apr 22, 2007 Medium white head. Opaque hazy pale yellow body. Light milky banana aroma with citric notes. Taste is mealy rounded banana and milk. Dry citric aftertaste. It’s OK. (0.25l on tap.)
