buzzoven (154), Japan Jun 7, 2008 Was quite curious to try this one. Hideji makes some interesting beers and this one gets a lot of attention. Basically, a smoked pale ale; but i found the smoke aspect of it to be quite subtle and tame. Whether or not that is a good thing or not, i’m not sure. There was very litle smell here, a nice golden amber clear colour. The taste is slightly citrus, grassy, some clove hints in there. The smoke picks up a little bit towards the finish but it mostly just carries a dry undertone. Not an overwhelmingly great beer...but worth a try. I think I will have to have a few more of these before the verdict is out.
omhper (10731), Stockholm, Sweden Sep 24, 2008 Updated: Oct 1, 2008 Bottled. Clear deep golden. Tangerine aroma. Medium sweet with rounded mouthfeel. Lots of tangerines, some caramelly malt, very subtle smoke. Fruity and quite hopy with medium bitterness. Good beer, but the smoke is so restrained that it is easy to miss it. TimE (1037), Tokyo, Japan Aug 7, 2007 Yes, a pale ale and smoke. Think it might not work?? your probably right. Smoke is very subtle on top of some flowery hops and lingering tanergines. How this works with smoke, I don’t know. Not well balanced and a bit too hoppy for a smoked ale. Still its worth a try. MartinT (4377), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 2, 2007 My Bottom Line:
If you think adding smoked malt to a Pale Ale is heresy, this Mogura might not be for you. But if you are open to jovial adventures, you might notice that its citrusy hops and cereal sweetness achieve balance, and the wooden smoked maltiness adds depth and intrigue to the flavor profile.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam lathers the misty pale amber.
-The nose and flavor profile are dominated by the citrusy hop signature.
-The body is lean (on the frail side, maybe) and carbonation prickly.
-The base malt sweetness somehow links the citrusy hoppiness and smoked maltiness.
Bottle; best before August 31st (had on July 22nd)
