ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA May 20, 2006 Draught pint at the brewery on 5/12/06. Foamy, moderately retentive sandy head sits atop of a rufous-purple-burgundy-brown body. Quite low on the clarity. Cardamon and anise-like, with something somewhat sweet adding some influence, but for the most part, this one is quite intriguingly subtle, or at least its quite mysterious what is in here. It must be carroway/cardamon, but it’s not overly spicy or heavy, with a light, almost fluffy feel at times, but then the malt seems to assert itself with some light, cookie dough and maple-brown sugar notes. Rather loose in the body, but ending dry and more put together than you would expect. Spicy, for sure, but interesting...... badnewsbeers (982), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA May 16, 2006 clear brown body with medium creamy head...aroma of caramel, sugar, and spice...flavor is similar, and is a mixture of anise, herbal spices, and the typical characteristics you would see in a brown ale...somewhat grainy aftertaste Silphium (2006), Lansing, Michigan, USA May 14, 2006 On tap at Hideout. Deep orange-brown body, translucent. Medium buff head. Aroma of red grape, toast, caramel, and hints of spice. Spicy body with touches of chocolate and coffee, but predominantly light caramel. Watery, thin body. Earthy hops finish. So-so. Hollywoodt (163), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA May 10, 2006 On tap at The Hideout. Aroma was kind of sweet and nutty. Very good flavor to this one... I’d have it again. A good brew.
