Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 19, 2007 Updated: Aug 15, 2008Cloudy light yellow banana-like body with an initially medium white head. This is a nice soft floral and perfumy beer. The malts are crisp and the hopping is generous but very soft. Smooth taste comprising of flower petals, a little citrus fruit, banana and vanilla. Very aromatic. Overall impression of drinking an ice-cream. A superior everyday beer. A beer for me. To all those who say I have a god complex, see, there’s nothing wrong with me, this beer suits me just fine. VikingHammer (362), Lynnfield, Massachusetts, USA Jun 15, 2007 Murky golden with a white head. Aromas of citrus and banana. Bitter at first with a follow up with a dry nice finish. Unique taste but has its own personality. I like it. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jun 4, 2007 12 oz bottle. Hazy gold with a big white head. Sweet bread and lemongrass nose, some perfume and orange notes. Surprising initial bite, a dry, bitter grass flavor, followed by white grapefruit and bread. Crisp, lively mouthfeel, but not from carbonation - the flavors really wake your tongue up! Sharp, grassy finish. More like a hopped up saison than a golden ale, but an excellent beer whatever you call it. A pleasant surprise! (Rating #1052) hopson (591), Williamsville, New York, USA May 10, 2007 draft- pale yellow in appearence, white head, big lemon/citrus hop flavor that I enjoyed quite a bit. My friend and I were not quite sure what kind of beer this was, but it was nice and refreshing on a late spring night. Would buy again. Friend really thought it had a sour apple thing going on that I noticed other raters had mentioned, but I did not get that. BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA Apr 27, 2007 12oz brown bottle from Florian’s. Very hazy yellow body with a half inch of white head. Smells malty with a good dose of floral hops. Tastes like citrussy pithy floral hops with caramel malt making a nice malt backbone. The mix of hops is really nice. Lighter bodied with only a moderate amount of carbonation. The great flavor and light mouthfeel make this a really drinkable beer. It has the perfect balance of full flavor and refreshing drinkability. Good stuff. Nihon (239), Vernon, Connecticut, USA Apr 18, 2007 Cloudy pale yellow appearance, Aroma of alcohol and bananas. Flavor is a bit mysterious, a little bitter. Decent balance, Flavor of a pine like candy, flavors come out more and more with every sip. ClarkVV (3578), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Feb 28, 2007 Have had this one in bottles quite a few times and recently (2/19) on draught at Redbones. Won’t be rating the draught version, as that was a diacetyl bomb. Another fantastic appearance, very well-conditioned and obviously unfiltered/unpasteurized. Huge, foamy, sticky white head laces very fully. Beer is clear, with a slight haze and shows a fine golden appearance with tiny bubbles in the liquid. Very dry and lightly fruity hops in the nose suggest styrians and/or hallertauers. Deliciously crisp and aromatic, with light yeast apparency on the finish. Malts are super-attenuated, lending only the barest hint of light vanilla-honey, but more a grainy, crisp, fresh barley aroma. No alcohol or flaws from the nose. Flavor is shockingly dry. Even for someone who enjoys ultra-dry beers, this stuff is challenging. Almost zero sweetness, just a bit of lemon-icing sugariness that quickly gets wisked away by the assertive, moderately bitter nectarine-meets-lemongrass hoppiness. Orange zest and lightly bitter lime-like notes collect as well, as a slightly nutty, moderately grainy, crisp maltiness further dries the palate. Very engaging, tight carbonation needs a good 10 minutes to reach an appropriate level (it starts a bit too aerated). Really interesting beer, my only complaint was the fact that you could "taste the Paper City in it". Hard to describe exactly, but there’s a slight papery, almost sour-apple (though much less intense/apparent than that sounds) note that I associate with Paper City beers that I can also taste here. Seems like they used Paper City yeast, which was not a great decision. I’ll take the XPA, though, I think that one is a bit more balanced overall.
