Well, sure, the Cold War might be over, but you can’t be certain, can you? You’ve got brewers putting all sorts of crazy things into your beer – do you ever really know where they came from, or why they’re even there in the first place?
You need a beer you can trust, and that’s why we make Purity of Essence. It’s an overstuffed blend of the best malts, fresh Noble hops, yeast, and water, brewed according to the German Reinheitsgebot – the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 – but you won’t find anything like this in the Old Country. Vienna and Munich malts add just a bit of color and malty firmness to balance the intense hoppy flavors and aromas that make this brew distinctly American.

Malts: German Pilsner, Vienna, Cara-Munich, and Wheat malts
Hops: German Perle, Tettnang, and Hersbrucker
Available in 22 ounce bottles and in kegs.

NOTE: ABV is stated as 6.5% on the bottle but 5.4% on the website. The former appears to be correct.

Orange, thin ring of foam. Woody, earthy, and citrusy aroma. Flavor is...mushroom? is that right? In addition to what we’ll call mushroom, there were some dryish, woody notes. Tasty, if pretty simple.

Hint of sour apple and lime, but also some chlorine. Appearance-wise, has a healthy, puffy head, like shaving cream. Cloudy carrot orange. Looks quite nice actually. The flavor is pale malts with a sharpish Euro-style malt. Touch of citrus and orange creamsicle. Takes a weird turn as it warms up. Has an interesting non-lager character. Some slightly sweet malts. The palate is thick and somewhat chewy. A decent, drinkable malty lager. Better than this brewery’s average output.

On tap @ Beer Temple. Pale blonde color, hazy. White rocky head. Aroma is refreshing, grainy/grassy, fruity, mildly sweet. Fairly neutral flavor ever so slightly sour. The finish saves this beer: nice and bitter

A new brew from High & Mighty, contract brewed at Paper City. 22oz bomber. Pours a medium to dark-ish amber color with a pretty nice pillowy off-white inch of head. Aromas of crisp lager yeast, some citrus and floral hops, and some toasted biscuit notes. Flavor starts with a fair amount of citrus bitterness and notes of lemon and grapefruit. Crisp, smooth toasted malt notes in there as well, but very much take the backseat to the hop profile. On the mellow side, not overdone on the flavors. Very smooth and crisp on the palate, with a clean finish. Decent brew, but nothing especially impressive.

Pours a pale copper into a shaker. Large white head recedes leaving spot lacing. Caramel and grass aromas. Bitter with little malt balance from front to back.

Blankboys bottle, shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & Tupalev. Appearance: Hazy golden orange, slightly brown. Aroma: Slight hop, sweet with banana in there too. Flavour: Musty, hoppy, slight bitter/acidic with an enjoyable hop finish.

20081220 Bomber from Abes. Bottled June 08. Hazy motor oil amber colored with excellent, rocky, sea foam head that seriously looks like it just blew up on the beach during a noreaster. Cool. Aroma and initial sip at first had some acetaldehyde green apple and metallic notes but those faded quickly and nice saaz grassiness became prominent. I probably should wait for a fresh sample and re-rate this summer. Mouthfeel has some aggressive eff and tinny notes mixed with definite earthy, grassy saaz. Yup, this one is a bit off but it could be worse. Stores need to to a better job of rotating out old stock.

Bottle thanks for another tic vic. Pours an orange body with a white head. Grainy dry lagered notes with a spruce character. Bitter dry hop character. Dry with a hint of fruit in the finish. Eh.

Pours hazy orange. A firm malt backbone and strong lemon-bitter presence define this beer. Some other citrus and grassy notes, but mostly lemon with a good sweet/bitter balance. Unfortunately the bitter that pulls through in the end is not very pleasant.
