3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 jredmond (3999) - Manhattan, New York, USA - JAN 24, 2013
Bottle shared by Bill at Vinny’s January 2013 tasting. Unfortunately this tasted a bit infected, but not too bad as I don’t necessarily hate a sour porter. Pours a deep body with some lacing. Aroma is oak, sour vinegar, and musk. Mouthfeel is thin with notes of toasted malts, light chocolate, vinegar, sour fruit and oak. I would love to try this again given the great feedback.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 PhillyCraft (1959) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 6, 2013
Bottle shared by Bill. Pretty sure this guy was infected which sucked since it had good reviews. It wasnt full on nasty but you could tell the sour was outweighing the porter. Notes were rusty penny, and bad vinegar. I could still get some oak and roasty malt out of it but wasnt enough to enjoy it, drain pour it is.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 chimaybier (108) - Redding, California, USA - OCT 5, 2012
Bottle purchased at Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. APPEARANCE / THE POUR: Pours a opaque, black color, with a dense, dark drown head that collapses quickly. AROMA / BOUQUET: Heavy wood barrel, dark chocolate (cacao) fresh cigar tobacco, in the forefront, dark cherry pit in the background.TASTE: MEGA INTENSE woodiness, dark baker’s chocolate, deep smokiness, with hop bitterness lending to the intensity. MOUTHFEEL / PALATE: Here’s where I feel the beer can benefit from more development. It is light to medium bodied; I would like to see this one a bit more full, with a thicker texture. Good carbonation, the finish is intensely smoky, woody, very nice.OVERALL: All aspects of this beer are great, the mouthfeel is a tad bit thin for my liking. I believe that all of High Water Brewing’s beers are great products, the mouthfeel / palate will be improved as time goes on. Look to this brewery to continue to produce world class beers- improving, and continuing to impress. Enjoy this with all smoked meats, dark Belgian chocolates, or a good Macanudo- for you cigar lovers. This should be enjoyed after having a High Water Campfire Stout. Great pairing...
