22oz bottle, same label as the Buffalo Trace version, but labeled as the 2011 barrel aged edition. yet another amazing extra from deftim13. thanks a ton, Tim! pours a hazy, russet brown capped by a rich, smooth, beige head that leaves rings of drippy lace. aroma is oustanding, bold and boozy, with heavy notes of woody bourbon, vanilla, spices, and sweet toffee backed by subtle notes of coconut cake, floral hops, dark berries, and raisins. flavor is delicious as well with sweet toffee, brown sugar, pecan pie filling, and citrus rinds up front backed by rich dark fruits, vanilla, toast, and rich, warming bourbon. palate is full bodied, lightly carbonated, and has just enough balance of sweetness and booziness to keep it from being cloying. overall, a very pleasant surprise and great barrel aged barleywine.

Bottled at PBF, thanks to baggio’s American friend whose name escapes at this time of the night. Hazy mahogany colour, small head. Bourbony caramel aroma. Sweet, full bodied, well rounded mouthfeel. Fudge wrapped in vanilla with heating bourbon and white pepper. Despite the sweet soft mouthfeel the heat of the bourbon takes over.

Deep ruby color, small beige head, Vanilla, toffee and bourbon in the nose. Medium-bodied. Lots of bourbon in the flavor, even pure, burning alcohol, vanilla. Way too alcoholic still although quite good.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2013 Bomber from BevMo Salinas. Nose is toffee, brown sugar, and hints of roast, vanilla, and floral hops. Hazy brown with a medium, long lasting, lightly lacing tan head. Flavor is sweet golden raisin pie, hints of bitterness and vanilla, with a mixed sweet and bitter finish with a touch of bourbon.

22 oz bottle, barrel aged Vintage 2011. Darkish brown with a foamy beige head. Nose is caramel and light bourbon. Medium body with a tingle. Taste is bourbon, caramel and bitter hops. Bourbon up front with a bitter finish. Least dynamic of the brews in this barleywine tasting but still quite good.

Bottle from Pangaea Bottle Shop, Sacramento. Pours dark brown with a modest tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a robust dark molasses flavor that leaves an alcoholic tingle on the tongue. There is a very bitter anise-like finish. A nice complex sipping beer.

Bottle vintage 2011: brown pour with small off-white creamy head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, vanilla, some roasted grain and a light coconut note. Flavor is creamy caramel, vanilla, light touch of molasses, mild bourbon and oak notes, and a hint of toasted grain. Palate is silky and mostly sweet with a boozy prescence but not harsh. Ends with a touch of bitter to the sweet. Wow, nice beer, rather expensive at $14. A great sipper with lots of elements to take in, and, changes as the beer warms. I will buy more if the budget allows.

$15.99 bomber from Olive Tree Market in OB a couple weeks ago. I hope this is a rendition of Old Inventory from Steve when he was at Valley Brewing. Clear ruby brown with a one finger beige head, swirly with decent retention. Caramel, toffee, toast and bourbon (the old delicious oxidized type, not a fresh boozy barrel) blend pretty well, as the latter two temper the sweetness of the first. Digging a bit deeper some dark ripe figs with a tinge of prunes comes forth with a bit of vanilla and cream. The flavor adds a slightly harsher booze presence, and even adding a little roast moving towards the finish. A bit boozy in the finish (doesn’t even try to hide its 10.5%), as the bourbon is becoming of the more fresh persuasion (maybe young is a better term, as opposed to my earlier statement on the aroma). The finish is bone dry with bitterness peaking at a 2-3, faint char showing up way way way late. Low carbonation with a full body. Still pretty good, but I’m glad I have one bottle for the cellar/base/ment/closet/windowsill(joke) to save for a year or so to see if this mellows.
