Healthy Spirits bottling number 48/216 thanks to bu11zeye. Insanely good stuff! Pours with a very low carbed body with a small tan head over a very deep brown hued body that leaves legs on the side of the glass. Aromas are of maple, huge bourbon barrel notes, boozy, bourbon, brown sugar, vanillin, raisins, rich malt, tannins, nutty and earthy. Smells great. Flavors are of bourbon, wood, brown sugar. Smooth yet very warming. Tannin, caramelization, vanillin. Light dark fruits, some boozy notes. Sandalwood, melanoidins. Medium to full viscosity. Light carbonation, tannin, quite warming. Pretty decadent and amazing. Great barrel character!

22oz bottle, bottle #145/216, purchased at Healthy Spirits. Definitely needed a bit of time to carbonate, but this turned out nicely. Pours a deep, slightly hazy cola-brown color; a light perimeter of bubbles. Alcohol-forward nose, with brown sugar, dark fruits, and plenty of barrel character; lightly charred, and too forward with the booze; plenty of warming alcohol heat coming off of this one. Very light carbonation, with medium-full body (perceived lighter because of the CO2) and nicely warming alcohol: strikes a vibrant balance in the mouth. Loads of brown sugar, vinous alcohol, and lightly chewy caramel: a layered barrel-aged barley wine that ends up relying a touch too much on its alcohol. More CO2 (it’s still light) would have been a plus. Definitely looking forward to trying the standard version. Lengthy, warming finish of dark fruits and viscous brown sugar.

doublebock (501) - California, USA - MAY 3, 2012
Cloud brown color with not head or carbonation. Strong but not overwhelming whiskey aroma. Wow, the taste is like licking a whiskey barrel. Notes of vanilla, butter and oak. The palate is a bit flat.

A - Pours a cloudy dark brown color with a thin ring of bubbly head around the edges. The head fades fairly quickly leaving behind very little lace. S - Aroma is a mix of sweet rich caramelized malts with some dark fruit, brown sugar, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and some booze. T - Starts off with some rich sweet caramelized malts, some dark fruit including some raisin and fig, and a bit of vanilla and licorice. Through the middle, some more Bourbon and oak flavors come through with a bit of brown sugar. The finish is a mix of sweet caramelized malts, dark fruit, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and a bit of booze. M - Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation. Feel smooth with a syrupy, warming, and sweet finish. D - Very drinkable. Much more Bourbon flavor than the other version. Also a bit less carbonated. Though the Bourbon also balances out the strong malt flavors nicely.

Bottle… Pours a murky brown with flashes of ruby and little to no head. The bouquet furnishes gobs of caramel, lightly toasted coconut and a whisper of maple. Full-bodied and silky with soft carbonation. The flavor presents sweet caramel and dark fruit flanked by lots of bourbon and wood. The hops are herbal, earthy and medium to heavily bitter. It’s quite hot and somewhat unbalanced with a ballsy, boozy, biting finish. Given enough time in the cellar, this is gonna be a very good barleywine. Being unafraid of alcohol, I’m digging it now. Kudos to richiesd for providing this rare treat!
