4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Picked this bottle up earlier this evening at a Wholefoods in San Francisco ($13). Pours a dark red/brown with a froth of light tan foam. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, alcohol spice, brown sugar, dark sweet malt, figs, plum and more bourbon through the finish. Taste is bourbon up front and through the finish with some alcohol heat and beneath there is a dense, chewy barley wine with caramel, toffee, and rich, sweet malt. Coating mouthfeel. The bourbon is slightly hot but the base beer (referenced as an ’11 vintage on the label) is presenting as very smooth and decadent and its sweetness plays well off the bourbon. Exellent beer.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Healthy Spirits bottling number 48/216 thanks to bu11zeye. Insanely good stuff! Pours with a very low carbed body with a small tan head over a very deep brown hued body that leaves legs on the side of the glass. Aromas are of maple, huge bourbon barrel notes, boozy, bourbon, brown sugar, vanillin, raisins, rich malt, tannins, nutty and earthy. Smells great. Flavors are of bourbon, wood, brown sugar. Smooth yet very warming. Tannin, caramelization, vanillin. Light dark fruits, some boozy notes. Sandalwood, melanoidins. Medium to full viscosity. Light carbonation, tannin, quite warming. Pretty decadent and amazing. Great barrel character!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle, bottle #145/216, purchased at Healthy Spirits. Definitely needed a bit of time to carbonate, but this turned out nicely. Pours a deep, slightly hazy cola-brown color; a light perimeter of bubbles. Alcohol-forward nose, with brown sugar, dark fruits, and plenty of barrel character; lightly charred, and too forward with the booze; plenty of warming alcohol heat coming off of this one. Very light carbonation, with medium-full body (perceived lighter because of the CO2) and nicely warming alcohol: strikes a vibrant balance in the mouth. Loads of brown sugar, vinous alcohol, and lightly chewy caramel: a layered barrel-aged barley wine that ends up relying a touch too much on its alcohol. More CO2 (it’s still light) would have been a plus. Definitely looking forward to trying the standard version. Lengthy, warming finish of dark fruits and viscous brown sugar.
