COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available in keg and pasteurised in PET bottles.
The beer on which the reputation of Highgate Brewery was built, and first produced in 1899. This traditional dark mild is brewed using pale, crystal and black malts supplemented with high maltose syrup. Bitterness is provided using a blend of Progress, Fuggle and Golding hops grown locally.
Tasting notes: This winner of three gold medals at international level has a complex palate with chocolate, liquorice, roast malt and fruit notes all discernible. A perfect balance between sweetness and bitterness is evident and makes for a satisfying, yet more-ish beer.

Cask-conditioned at the Bon Accord, Glasgow 1/07/09. Dark brown in colour with a decent, off-white head. Sweet malts and fruity aroma with a hint of roastiness. Flavour was much the same with a gentle, bitter finish. Ok.

Highgate ’Dark Mild’ in a 500ml brown bottle, best before Oct 2010, tatsed on one of my random beer evenings in Sept 2010. 3.4% ABV, poured into a UK pint sleeve glass. Deep ruby red, cream coloured head which gave some, but not much lacing. The aroma was of malt molasses and dark chocolate hints. The flavours in the taste were again chocolate, molasses and some liquorice added for good measure. fairly thin body wise, which let it down somewhat. OK, but not one of the better Dark Milds.

Deep mahogany body, no head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, nuts, weak hop bite, caramel, toffee and Kola Nut. Good balance between sweetness and bitterness. Soft mouthfeel, a little oily. Gentle carbonation. Slightly dry finish. A decent mild, ticks all the boxes, but doesn’t exactly blow you away.

0.5 l bottle. Reddish brown color. Sweetish aroma with raisins, toffee and nuts. Dryer flavor with toffee, raisins, hint of chocolate, salty minerals and hint of smoke. Watery palate. Disappointing watery taste after promising aroma.

Dark nut brown color, steady beige, creamy head, some lace. Caramelly, a bit milky aroma. Mild, light palate. Some coffee, toffee and hops. Hard mouthfeel. Probably better in cask.

50cl bottle, K-Market Vantaa. Pours brown color with a small white head. Aroma is malty, roasted and chocolaty. Flavour is caramel malty, quite dry actually, coffee and some fruit. Enjoyable, one of the better mild ales I have tried.
