3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Spiesy (2336) - Sydney, - FEB 21, 2004
Cask Conditioned, at the Masque Haunt, London. The first English beer I’ve seen specifying the ABV to two decimal places. The clip said 5.35% but having checked their website I believe it to be the same ale. Dark brown with a deep reddish hue. Scummy beige head. Dark, sour aroma, bitterish, something similar to raw egg whites (but not the normal sulphurous aroma we’re all familiar with). Some very late peppery notes appear at the very end of the palate.

On cask at Manchester Winter Ales Festival. Bittersweet. There’s a top end note of zest. Very malty. Like lemon sweets.

First tasteed this at the Glasgow Winter Beer Festival in November 1997. Cask, gravity dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin creamy buff head. Slight hint of wood smoke and roast grain in the long aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a complex sweet maltloaf base with syrupy dates, raisins, treacle toffee and creamy mocha coffee. Slight dry dusty prickle of hop resins gives a short spicy aftertaste. Finish is malty with hints of bitter chocolate, liquorice and oak cask notes. A superb Old Ale and highly recommended. Reminded me of Harviestoun Old Manor - but this was slightly better.

Cask at the Wharf Aalborg. Dark amber in colour, with a fizzy head that almost instantly evaporated. Not much of aroma mostly malts and fruits. Flavours of malts, raisin and some booze. A fairly light mouthfeel, but overall a pretty solid Old Ale!
