COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We are proud to present homebrewer Alex Buerckholtz’s smoked porter as best of show in the second annual Highland Cup. This beer will be entered into the 2009 GABF’s Pro-Am competition held in September and will only be sold in NC. This Robust Smoked Porter is brewed with a generous portion of German smoked malt and accented with earthy Fuggle hops. The result is an amazingly rich, complex porter with undertones of smokiness and roasted malts flavors. Enjoyable now or later, this beer can be cellared and will evolve over time.

Look is disappointing. While the color is nice and black, there is very little head happening. Scent is slightly odd as well, a strong hop presence is felt while i sense no smoke. This unfortunately pans out in the taste. Some love this, but I prefer my porters and stouts to be less hoppy. Not much carbonation and too thin to support this.

Bottle:   Deep brown, nearly black, moderate to thin frothy beige head, sparce lacing.   Smoked malts, peat, chocolate, light cinnamon on the nose.   Pale smoked malts on the tongue, faint roastiness, slight lactose sweetness.   A little doppelbockish like in its malt profile.   Bready, to a degree.   Low hop.   Body and mouthfeel could be a bit beefier, but as is its okay.   Soft peat, roasted malts, lactose on the exit.   A light example, clean, tasty, and not as big as say the Alaskan example.   Could be a good intro for beginners.   Pretty tasty.

Bottle. Dark colored pour with a tan head on it. Fairly smoky smell, but not over powering like some of the ones from Germany. Taste is sweet and smooth, kind of smoky but mostly an afterthought. This is similar to Stone Smoked Porter, which is awesome in my book. Not a bad beer, I would go back to this one if I saw it in the stores...

Taste: Dark chocolate, vanilla, smoked ham. Finishes smokey with faint bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, sticky, average carbonation.

Overall: A super solid porter with a nice kick of smoke.

Poured a dark brown, with a tan colored head that was light and fluffy. The smoked malt gavea nice aroma. The taste was of the malt with the smoke somewhat muted but present. Mouthfeel was much like any porter and the afteretaste was bitter and malty.

Bomber. Pours a deep dark woody brown near black ok head. Aroma is nutty, chocolate, toasted malts, moderate burnt malts, some smoke, herbal and grassy green hops, some soy as well. Flavor is earthy, leather, smoked malts, light meatiness, oily, grass, toast, nuts and some good chocolate malts- leads to a slight bittersweet finish.

bomber 3/21/2010. pours orange-ish brownish black with a small tan head. lightly sour smoky aroma akin to salami... some roast, spiciness and fudgy chocolate. the flavor is a nice balance of apple-like sweetness, dry hops, smoke and choco porter. the smoke is light and very well controlled. i can taste all of the attributes of the aroma along with some hoppy dryness on the finish. medium bodied and crisp. i’d have no problem drinking this if all these other folk weren’t around... 7/3/7/4/16/3.7
