This is definitely a roasted malt bomb. It assaults the senses, but in all the ways the name implies. This one is definitely not messing around. Tons of chocolate and coffee in the aroma and taste as well. Hops are present, but play a supporting role as they should. This beer envelops the palate with its oily, full bodied, bittersweet goodness. The finish is a bit dry and accompanied by lots of roasted malt and bitterness. An awesome brew.

12 ounce bottle thanks to Brent, man I loved the imperial version of this so much. Pours a deep brown color with a medium beige head. The aroma is coffee, roasted malts, nutty. The flavor is dry, roasted coffee and malts, a light fruity goodness comes through, and suggests just how good the imperial version will be. Still, very nice.

22oz bottle left at my place by matt so i thought i’d be doing him an injustice by not drinking it..... pours a medium bodied dark cola brownish black with a thin tan head.... aroma of cocoa and a bit or roasted malt....flavors of burnt roasted malt with a little bit of bitter ash thrown in for good measure. starts on the sweeter side but quickly biters up. smooth on the palate, body on the thinner side, with medium carbonation.

Bottle. Pours black with an inch of tan head. Not much of aroma- light roastiness. Coffee and dark chocolate in the mouth- a bit thin... Nothing special.

Bottle thanks to and shared with xnoxhatex on 8.20.09. Pours a dark brown, near black, with a fizzy small froth. Very roasty aroma, some sweet cherry oxidation notes. Flavor follows, smooth, rich, roasty, creamy chocolate, lighter bitter coffee, some acidity in the finish. Creamy body but highly carbonated.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle. Appearance: Cloudy, deep brown with slight garnet highlights. A big, foamy, light brown head that has good retention. Aroma: This one seemed a little on the stale side. Coffee and earth were the dominate notes with a bit of wet cardboard and some mocha as well. Flavor: Raw roasted notes, husk, earth, mineral, bitter chocolate, cardboard, and a bit of stale coffee. Palate: Medium carbonation with a medium-rich mouthfeel and a long, roasty finish. Overall: This beer may have been better at one point but it seems past it’s prime now. Seems like some oxidation has gotten the better of this one. I would say try it fresh and it may turn out to be a better experience.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque except for the faintest of mahogany edges when held to a light source and a one finger foamy light beige head that quickly fades into a thin cap. Very roasty chocolate malt aroma with hints of bitter dark chocolate, coffee bean, toast, toffee and subtle hops. This aroma reminds me of a deep roast mocha coffee. Roasted malty aroma up front with a silky chocolate body lying underneath with hints of roasted coffee bean, toffee, oatmeal, chocolate syrup, toast, hazelnut, subtle hops and some bittersweet dark chocolate. This beer has a slightly chewy viscous mouth fell but it is not overpowering with a lot of sweet chocolate and roasted coffee notes.. The ABV is very well masked and even though this beer is pretty complex and rich it is pretty drinkable. Another solid offering from Highland, a very underrated brewery

Bottle. Poured Dark black. Sweet molasses nose. SI’me roasted. Malts a bit thin with strong bitter finish. Sweet but not cloying.
