HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Jul 31, 2007 Bottle (12oz). Looks basically opaque - black with ruby highlights, solid lasting creamy-rocky tan head. Very nice aroma, too - dry chocolate and roast coffee beans, table cream, sweet herbal hops - really very pleasing (7+). The taste follows, a little bit of iron tang to it, but mostly dry roast coffee bean & chocolate malt, bitter finish. Average body, but nicely creamy, good bitterness balancing out the malt sweetness, it finishes slow and balanced. Really well done - will have it again; I imagine this is pretty amazing on nitro. thomaspwrs (3), Pennsylvania, USA does not count Jul 30, 2007 Room temp bottle. Nice black pour with a modest tan head. Faint coffee aroma, with increasing chocolate as the foam head dissipated. Flavor was very big; a dry chocolate coffee with only a trace of hop. A tad light in body but definitely a beer to repeat. Solid. CheersMate1 (766), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 24, 2007 Lovely and subtle chocolate aroma. This beer smells wonderful. Looks to be a bit on the thin side, but I will have to wait and see how the palate is. The head was a great chocolate color, also I forgot to mention that the beer had a lovely coffee aroma. Great mixture of smells. Black in color, your typical stout color, but a great color it is. Very thin palate. Great wood flavor, with a hint of chocolate. There are some burnt notes in this beer. The beer is a bit too thin to be GREAT! I usually associate stouts with a thick consistency. A somewhat bitter finish. The hops aren’t that noticeable, except in the aftertaste. Decent beer a little boring. JohnC (2227), Mission Viejo, California, USA Jul 20, 2007 Jet black pour with a rocky tan head, the aroma is lightly coffee scented. The palate is light and the flavor is dry and of coffee. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jul 17, 2007 on tap @HopfestNC-pours a diminishing light brown head and black color with red tint. Aroma is dark malt-roasty/chocolate/coffee. Taste is dark malt-roasty/chocolate/coffee, secondary hops bitterness. Comes across more as a porter to me. Good carbonation. Occasional. SynergyXJ (506), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Jul 13, 2007 Bottle Black pour with tan head that died quite quickly. Thick aroma of coffee, roasted malt, caramel. Great complex flavor profile of roasted malts and coffee well balanced with hops. A bit watery, but definitely good brew. zathrus13 (1288), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Jul 7, 2007 Dark brown, with a tan head. Aroma is choxolate, coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of dark fruit. Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Body is a little thin. A good one. Thanks to JMichael for this bottle. mcallister (30), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 2, 2007 Dark brown but showing transparency bordering on rust at the edges. Head is minute and fades quickly. Some sediment floats wonderously about.
What a nose on this beauty. Liquid dark chocolate with sweet mocha aromas laced with vanilla and caramel. Nutty aromatics and some butterscotch. Black berry and black cherry aromas as well. Damn fine smelling beer and hard to drink as it smells so divine.
Very fine low ABV stout. Not as impressive as the nose would suggest, but impressive nonetheless. Main knock I have is the mouthfeel. Which seems to be way to thin and watery and leaves nay a finish. Flavors are much like the nose without the amount of melted caramel. Mocha, vanilla, dark chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, mollasses, black cherry, caramel with a cream brulee wondering. Some roasty notes as well. Could have been higher on drinkability if not for the lackluster mouthfeel.
