The first beer in a trio of Orkney beers drank in The Plough, Shifnal during a CAMRA pub crawl on 14th Dec 13.
Hand-pulled half-pint: dark brown with a red hue, on top an off-white blanket of foam.
The nose and taste were over roasted, almost burnt malts that gave a dark chocolate and ground coffee bean aroma and flavour. Semi-bitter in the aftertaste this is a good traditional Mild and well worth seeking out. Full bodied and almost rich (for a Dark Mild) in texture.

(Cask at Black Door, 20130913) The beer poured clear and almost black. Its head was small, long lasting and lightly brown. Aroma had toasted malts, toffee and English hops. Palate was medium bodied and low carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, toasted mals, sweet English hops, coffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. The aroma was decent but the taste was too dominated by the burnt flavour.

Cask at Blackdoor, Helsinki. Pours dark ruby brown in color with a foamy head. Some roasted notes, bit of coffee and cocoa powder being there. Feels slightly raw at first. Roasted coffee beans, some nutty notes and slightly bitter chocolate in taste. The nice nutty notes were a positive surprise here. A bit of greenish notes and raw cold coffee is present towards the end though. Hmm, this keeps changing a lot, now there’s some nice nutty notes again in the finish.

Deep deep brown to black sparkle.Shiny. Almost opaque. Super complex intricate magnolia coloured lacing. Beautiful roasty nutty smell.
To taste, complex chocolate, some smooth earth, and a roasty sous bois leafish flavour that begins softly. by the middle it loses some complexity and leaves a firm dark dry coating through the entire mouth. Never loses complexity or balance.A remarkably well integrated beer and though its components are easily indentifiable it also meshes well as a complete whole.
Possibly the best Scottish mild I have ever had.

Cask handpull at the Seven Stars Highland beer festival, Bristol. Dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel and coffee. Rather sweet, but with a slightly bitter roasted dark chocolate finish.

Cask conditioned at The Brewery Tap, Chester. Dark chestnut with cream head. There is a rich and woody, smokey, burnt and nutty fullness to the malts, nicely bitter and dry later. There is a coffee character to it. Very decent.
