"Lordy, thatís as red as the devilís britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devilís Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devilís Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highlandís twist on the great American IPA.

Ok IPA but I was expecting a little more. Good looking but punch it more with dry hops and more rye. Good not great.

Rich deep copper and light brown coloured body with a thick, two centimetre tall tan head - quite dark for the style, but still looks good. Aroma of nuts, earth, caramel, toffee along with some earthier and nuttier hops - seemingly of East Kent or German origins. Medium-bodied; Assertive floral and toffee flavours at first with a hit of hops right at the beginning and a finish of malt, earth and caramelised sugars and not much else. Aftertaste shows a lighter taste of raisins, grapefruit, pine and more earth, but still not much character around the malt - more hoppy than anything, but not overly complex or flavourful. Overall, a decent IPA that has itís moments, but given my good experience with this brewery, I was expecting and hoping for more, but this fell short. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 09-March-2014 for US$2.39 sampled at home in Washington on 03-June-2014.

Bottle 12fl.oz. @ cgarvieuk [ Lets do a chrisO Tasting ], Edinburgh, Scotland.

[ As Highland Devils Britches IPA ].
Clear medium to light amber color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, light nutty, light to moderate hoppy, orange - citrus. Flavour is moderate sweet and moderate to light heavy bitter with a long duration, hop bitter, caramel, malty, licorice hop notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20140315]

Half pour at the source after a decent hike- the way to drink beer, really. Great color- vibrant, rich red with a decent head. Nicely balanced between sweet and hops (avoids pitfall of the Extra Special Malted beers seem that usually err on side of sickly sweet) with interesting finish. DeScription calls it pear and apple in the finish- not sure I get that, but definitely not your usual hops. Interesting, good. Guess itís the last of the batch until 2015.

12 oz bottle from Kroger The IPA poured a translucent reddish amber with off white head and much lacing. The floral aromas of the Calypso hops greet you with citrus. The ale for high IBU (70) could be better balanced. The light body ale had moderate carbonation. The IPA falls short of its potential. The finish was dry with warming bitterness on the tongue.

A dark orange appearance with a white head. The aroma contains some citrus, caramel, and cider-ish things. The flavor is somewhat bitter but also malty with a dry finish. I taste some caramel, grapefruit, and lemons. The hop character outweighs the malt in this one. Some herbal notes can be found. Overall this a nice one.

Bomber from Total Wine in Jensen Beach/Stuart. Bottle date of 1/22/14. Pours a clear brownish orange with a rocky white head leaving great streaks and streams of lace. Aroma has lemony citrus, light pine, some sour stone fruits and a solid malty presence. Taste is of grapefruit, lemon zest, biscuity malts, some sweet fruits and tangy pine. Somewhat more "English pale"y than west coast IPA, but then with mad dry hopping to try to bridge the gap?? Or a little old?? Medium to full bodied and syrupy. Finishes nicely bittersweet, with components of both bitterness and sweetness, and with some length. Seems to have better pieces than the overall picture turned out to be. If there was a 13.5, this would get it. Solid, but something just not put together correctly with it.

Draft: Pours hazy amber with a small white head. Scent is peppery orange. Taste is barley malt, orange-peel bitter. A little spice. Not bad.

Bottle @ The Lets do a Chris O tasting. Pours copper and clear with a big fluffy white head. Quite hoppy and citrus at the start then it turns malty and sweet on the finish, odd, not bad.
