"Lordy, thatís as red as the devilís britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devilís Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devilís Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highlandís twist on the great American IPA.

Pours clear red amber with a soapy yellow-white head that laces decently. Aroma is tropical citrus fruit and toasted malt. Taste leads with mandarin orange citrus and notes of lime and bridges into some resiny pine hop. It all rests on a bed of caramel malt that concludes with some nice roasted flavors. Aftertaste is a mix of citrus and bitter hops. Moderately carbonated. This is a damn good IPA that I think is being under-rated. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

@ Jungle Jims / Eastgate OH --- Clear mahogany with a splotchy head cover and dripping bands of lace. Taste reminds me of listening to AM radio 40 years ago and barely hearing a distant station behind one that was much closer. That would be malt : hops here. Malt may be present, but it takes effort to uncover it. A treat for hopheads, but not enough balance to work for me. Kudos for a lot of flavor in a 6%er.

12 oz. bottle poured into shaker. Beautiful reddish copper color with a finger of light tan head that leaves some nice lacing. Grassy hop and earthy roasted malt aroma. Flavor is slight caramel sweetness and biscuit with a long bitter hop finish. Iím a sucker for a nice red, so I enjoyed this.

Taster on tap at Barleyís during RBWG. Clear orange red color. Thin khaki head. Good thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Bigger moderate bitter taste, kind of zesty, minimal sweet. Good grapefruit citrus hop, caramel malt, some biscuity malt. Very nice resiny, citrusy IPA. A step up from Kashmir, I think.

Draft pour at Barleyís. Pours a reddish amber with an off-white head. Notes of amber malts, grass, florals, and citrus fruits. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry, mildly bitter mouthfeel. Disappointing IPA.

Intense, rusty, clear, sudsy off white head. Ok label, US longneck. Tannic, hoppy, slightly sweet aroma. Moderately tannic, very lightly astringent, stiff bittering, toast, muted cocoa and chalk. Aftertaste is assertively bitter with toasty, tea notes. ABC, Bull Run

Pours clear amber. Nose is candy, pears, cherries, spicy hops, citrus, sweet mango. Medium toasty crackery malt flavors with a touch of burnt caramels and again the sweet fruity hop flavors. Really pretty damn solid.

Bottle--cooper color with a medium, white head. Piney hops aroma that sat well on a base of biscuit, almost like roasted hop. Biscuit and caramel flavor up front followed by a good amount of hops. Good lacing throughout with some hop bitterness on the finish. Total wine. An IPA with roast and caramel, my kind of drink.

Keg blew, so this was free. Itís an IPA with a light body. Citrus hops. Mildly bitter for the style. Slight caramel in the finish. Better than the run of the mill beer.
