COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Lordy, thatís as red as the devilís britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devilís Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devilís Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highlandís twist on the great American IPA.

Appearance: pours with a 2Ē fluffy cream colored head. Significant lacing and moderate carbonation. Color is a reddish brown and slightly cloudy. Aroma: floral and some citrus hops dominate the aroma with pungent hop oil very noticeable. There is also a toasted bread malt smell. Mouthfeel: medium bodied with a sticky mouthfeel. This finishes mostly dry. Flavor: bitter hops combine with a somewhat Ďburnt toastí flavor from the malts, but there is enough sweetness to maintain some balance. There is definite grapefruit taste along with some earthy and floral character hops. The malts hide in the middle and background with some whole wheat bread toast and hints of caramel and slight green apple.

Bottle. Poured amber with a creamy off-white head that has some lasting. Floral aroma. Bready flavor with a light floral backing. Medium body and light bitterness.

12oz bottle. Red color, white ring. Aroma is if fruity esters, simple sugary malt, and some resin. Sharp hop bite, toasted malts with a touch of caramel malt characters. Very simple. Iíve had American Pale Ales more complex than this IPA. A bold beer for a session. (3746)

Pours a reddish orange gold color with a creamy off white head and lots of sticky lacing .... aroma of caramel and roasted malts with a nice fruity/citrusy/floral hop combo to it ... taste is bitter and malty with a nice balance of caramel, biscuity and roasted malts, bitter fruity and floral hops .... has a nice spicy hoppy bite .... thin to medium body with a dry lightly bitter but lingering finish .... balanced with good flavors ... solid little ipa

Comes out of the growler - crud, it fizzes like nobodyís business, and when I finally get more beer than foam itís a lovely clear mahogany with a VERY thick and fluffy wheat head. Dang, you just look at the growler and it starts to fizz over. Strong and hoppy aroma has an apple overtone and notes of hay and citrus plus a hint of - cloves? Hoppy flavor is woody and scarcely bitter, quite fruity with equal parts apple and sour orange, subtly malty with a snip of cloves. Yes, that is cloves. Texture is thin and watery but has good fizz. A devil of a good IPA.

Bottle. Looks exactly like the picture about 300 px up and to the left. Aroma is full of hops and malts - plenty of citrus in here. Taste is not as good as the aroma, kind of put off by the amount of malts in this one. It is a good beer, but I would rather drink Kashmir I believe.

From bottle. Mild hop nose with light orange aroma, a bit spicy with a little rye. Dark amber clear with frothy-foamy white lacing head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts a little malty with carbonic bite and lots of hop bitterness. A bit musky with dry nutty bitter after and light oxidation.

Amber color out of the bottle with a thin off white head. Orange hop nose with lots of grassy bitterness. Orange and pear flavors with burnt toast and roasted grain astringency, and a grassy hop finish. Long bitter finish with red grapefruit zest and more grass.

Bottl.e Rusty red, still, and shiny. The thin head is nonetheless quite adhesive. This has a metallic, tangy aroma. Indeed, it drinks with a copper-tinged bitterness a bit, but otherwise is unfortunately not that much of a standout from your every-day macro lagers. (#5033, 5/25/2013)
