COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Lordy, thatís as red as the devilís britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devilís Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devilís Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highlandís twist on the great American IPA.

Poured into a pint glass out of a growler from Libation Station in Johnson City, TN. Pours a clear dark reddish-brown with a thick off-white head. Really good head retention and lacing. The aroma is full of pine and earth along with a noticeable roasty character. Also toffee and caramel all working in perfect harmony with the hops. A really nice balance and definitely more British than American. The taste has more in the way of hops than the aroma with tons of pine along with a little bit of Earthyness and dank. Just a tiny amount of citrus in this one. Nice malt character with caramel and toffee and just a little bit of roast. Very assertive long lasting bitterness along with a full and creamy mouthfeel. Overall, while this is only 6% it feels like a much bigger beer with the substantial mouthfeel. A great IPA and one of the best beers I have had from Highland.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark copper/ruby with off-white head. Aroma is caramel and toasted malts, floral and piney hops, faint spice, and faint cherries. Flavor is hop bitterness forward atop a lightly sweet malt base with subtle berry notes. Medium body.

Good citrusy IPA smell, slightly reddish brown appearance, taste is very slightly sweet up front, then mellow hops the rest of the ride...very slightly more bitter finish than desired though

Citrus aroma, very hoppy with grapefruit. Citrus flavors and very bitter on the palate. Good deal of lacing on the glass.

dark amber coloring with a somewhat malty nose. it has the lingering bitterness of an ipa but lacking on flavor. not a bad beer but only marginal

DocJitsu (1156) - Florida, USA - FEB 26, 2015
Pours a clear copper with a foamy off-white/beige head. Surprisingly pungent grapefruit bouquet. Soft mouthfeel with mildly burning carbonation and a hint of hop heat. A more robust roastiness in the malt profile than the color would suggest. A bit of rye. Grapefruit hop character.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2015 This offering is a great change of pace from the tradition IPA. With a smooth finish, this beer has a slight fruit-based aftertaste and smells a tad bit like pears/apples. Beer has a red glow like the eyes of a devil (hence its name), but this beer tastes very good for all of you IPA lovers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass. Pours reddish light copper with thin off-white head. Aroma is medium caramel malt with roasty undertones, just a hint of hops. Taste is similar, dark caramel malt dominates. Some hops, mostly bitter and grassy, but not much for an IPA. Lingers bitter on the finish.

12 ounce bottle from a six pack, purchased at the local Harris Teeter here in Huntersville, NC. Pours a reddish copper color with a thin head. Aroma is lightly hoppy. Taste is slightly butter with some hop notes. Lightly bitter finish as well. Just an average IPA in my opinion, nothing too special about this.
