COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Lordy, that’s as red as the devil’s britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devil’s Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devil’s Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highland’s twist on the great American IPA.

Poured into a pint glass out of a growler from Libation Station in Johnson City, TN. Pours a clear dark reddish-brown with a thick off-white head. Really good head retention and lacing. The aroma is full of pine and earth along with a noticeable roasty character. Also toffee and caramel all working in perfect harmony with the hops. A really nice balance and definitely more British than American. The taste has more in the way of hops than the aroma with tons of pine along with a little bit of Earthyness and dank. Just a tiny amount of citrus in this one. Nice malt character with caramel and toffee and just a little bit of roast. Very assertive long lasting bitterness along with a full and creamy mouthfeel. Overall, while this is only 6% it feels like a much bigger beer with the substantial mouthfeel. A great IPA and one of the best beers I have had from Highland.

In a flight of tasters at the brewery. A pretty amber + red color (not red enough to call red), moderate hop aroma, little to no head and low lacing. Maybe I don’t really get the style, but the bitterness clashed with the malt and didn’t really blend the two styles as much as just fighting on the taste buds.

Bottle. Aroma of fruit, toast, pine, and citrus fruit. Pours clear copper full tan head. Mildly sweet taste. Medium body, light sticky texture, ave carbonation, pretty heavy bitter lingering finish. Overall this was ok. A little more alcohol to be an IPA in my opinion, but definitely has the hop presence. Good for something different to try.

12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours deep brown/copper with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of floral and lightly citrusy hops plus a little toasty and pale malts. Flavor the same. Average texture. Not the best IPA, but interesting.

12oz bottle pours a clear brick red with some creamy, lacing white head. Nose is nice and approachable, orange, grapefruit, lemon candy, malt, cracker, some hand soap. Flavor is solid too, bitter, soapy, pine, grapefruit pulp, orange zest, a little vegetal, some malt, cracker. Medium bodied, lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish.

Bottle from total wine sterling. Looked reddish at first but it settles into brown with a thin khaki head that doesn’t leave a lot of lacing. Has a bit of an old socks must on the nose. Had a bit of bitterness up front but it fades as it warms. Not my favorite from Highland.

12oz bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Never a huge fan of Kashmir, and I regret to say that DB wasn’t much either. Nice look, but it does come across as a little thin and clear for the style. Bright fruity hops in the nose but something a bit cidery in the aroma. Thankfully, not getting the onion thang that others have reported. Thin mouthfeel, and that puts the spotlight on a pretty sub-standard personality. Apple cider, day old tea, and biscuit malts. Oof.

From a 12 oz bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours a clear amber with a thick off white head. Somewhat sour citrus nose. Flavors of grass and light citrus. Mild bitter finish. An okay IPA.

Very fruity, apricot hops. Good caramel maltiness. I really liked this one.

Dark amber color with a medium off-white head, good thickness and decent staying power. Definitely a English version of an IPA with its strong malt backbone and a musty hop presence. There is a good hop bite in the taste but the bitterness works against the sweetness of the caramel malts. It is an odd mix and I don’t think it works well.
