COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Lordy, that’s as red as the devil’s britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devil’s Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devil’s Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highland’s twist on the great American IPA.

Ok, so I’m not sure I had the same experience with this one as most of the 6 people who have rated it. I thought this was a terrible beer. Pour is just fine, pretty and clean with a little depth missing. Nose and flavor however are just not coming together for me. The aroma has an ’old onion’ component to it that is just a deal breaker on its own. Some spent tea leaf and garlic come through too. I have NO idea where this ’pear and apple’ is supposed to be... Lightly earthy hops in the flavor with onion/garlic coming through strong. Dry and light (too light....) body. Thin even...

Medium body with a good amount of carbonation. Malty, filling, with a fairly neutral flavor and finish.

Bottle. Looks exactly like the picture about 300 px up and to the left. Aroma is full of hops and malts - plenty of citrus in here. Taste is not as good as the aroma, kind of put off by the amount of malts in this one. It is a good beer, but I would rather drink Kashmir I believe.

From bottle. Mild hop nose with light orange aroma, a bit spicy with a little rye. Dark amber clear with frothy-foamy white lacing head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts a little malty with carbonic bite and lots of hop bitterness. A bit musky with dry nutty bitter after and light oxidation.

Amber color out of the bottle with a thin off white head. Orange hop nose with lots of grassy bitterness. Orange and pear flavors with burnt toast and roasted grain astringency, and a grassy hop finish. Long bitter finish with red grapefruit zest and more grass.

Bottl.e Rusty red, still, and shiny. The thin head is nonetheless quite adhesive. This has a metallic, tangy aroma. Indeed, it drinks with a copper-tinged bitterness a bit, but otherwise is unfortunately not that much of a standout from your every-day macro lagers. (#5033, 5/25/2013)

In a flight of tasters at the brewery. A pretty amber + red color (not red enough to call red), moderate hop aroma, little to no head and low lacing. Maybe I don’t really get the style, but the bitterness clashed with the malt and didn’t really blend the two styles as much as just fighting on the taste buds.

Bottle. Aroma of fruit, toast, pine, and citrus fruit. Pours clear copper full tan head. Mildly sweet taste. Medium body, light sticky texture, ave carbonation, pretty heavy bitter lingering finish. Overall this was ok. A little more alcohol to be an IPA in my opinion, but definitely has the hop presence. Good for something different to try.

12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours deep brown/copper with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of floral and lightly citrusy hops plus a little toasty and pale malts. Flavor the same. Average texture. Not the best IPA, but interesting.

12oz bottle pours a clear brick red with some creamy, lacing white head. Nose is nice and approachable, orange, grapefruit, lemon candy, malt, cracker, some hand soap. Flavor is solid too, bitter, soapy, pine, grapefruit pulp, orange zest, a little vegetal, some malt, cracker. Medium bodied, lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish.

Bottle from total wine sterling. Looked reddish at first but it settles into brown with a thin khaki head that doesn’t leave a lot of lacing. Has a bit of an old socks must on the nose. Had a bit of bitterness up front but it fades as it warms. Not my favorite from Highland.
