COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Lordy, thatís as red as the devilís britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devilís Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devilís Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highlandís twist on the great American IPA.

Interesting that that they call this a twist on the great American IPA given that it definitely has more of a British IPA thing going on. Lots of malt evident from the dark pour and the biscuity nose. Also caramel, bitter tea, and some citrus and herbal notes. Nose is pleasant and interesting, but the taste is a mess. Dirty and unpleasantly bitter. Like sweet tea gone bad.

Draft: Pours hazy amber with a small white head. Scent is peppery orange. Taste is barley malt, orange-peel bitter. A little spice. Not bad.

Bottle @ The Lets do a Chris O tasting. Pours copper and clear with a big fluffy white head. Quite hoppy and citrus at the start then it turns malty and sweet on the finish, odd, not bad.

A clear amber color. Off white head. Very smooth. Easy to drink. Some coffee and toffee flavors. Malt aroma. Balanced with hops. Might be rating the wrong beer.

Bottle from BillyChaos. Pours muddy orange with tall white head. Aroma is citrus, apple. The biscuit flavor mentioned in the description does come through. Some decent malt flavoring but no real hop presence to balance. Ends up being a bit sweet and "one note".

Bottle at Craigís. Pours clear copper, thick white head. Light citrus aromas, mostly toffee though. Some bitterness on the taste, sweet finish. Odd one.

A weird IPA. Pours dark red. Smells hoppy, but has strong malt flavors. Some pine and slight citrus notes. Hefty hops. Interesting beer.

Gaelic meets Kashmir. Doesnít like each other. Amber meshed with IPA and combo results are not as good as each individually. Not a drain pour but an experiement, while not a failure, not a success either

Pours darker than an IPA. Very dry, with some hops. Bitter finish. Different in terms of an IPA. Hop bitterness is there but thereís very little else there. Meh.

Amber with an off white head. Aroma is pine hops with some toasted malt. Flavor is toasted malt, a little nutty with strong piney hops. A little bit resinous with a bitter finish. Wife: 3.75
