"Lordy, that’s as red as the devil’s britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devil’s Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devil’s Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highland’s twist on the great American IPA.

Interesting that that they call this a twist on the great American IPA given that it definitely has more of a British IPA thing going on. Lots of malt evident from the dark pour and the biscuity nose. Also caramel, bitter tea, and some citrus and herbal notes. Nose is pleasant and interesting, but the taste is a mess. Dirty and unpleasantly bitter. Like sweet tea gone bad.

Bottle Jay brought back from the Carolinas. Pours a dark copper color with a small off white head. Earthy, piney hop nose. Light caramel and bread notes in the flavor. Solid pine and floral notes from start to finish. Medium bodied with a lasting bitterness.

Nice stuff. Pretty dry, not super over the top hoppy. Liked the red twist. Brought from Jay from South Carolina.

Poured a murky amber orange color with aromas of light rye, caramel, malt and some pine. Flavors follow suit rye and light pine caramel as well. Meh...

Growler shared with Brian. Not usually an ipa fan so if you are ignore this. The rye mellows it out nicely. Great citrus aroma. Smooth finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber with small beige head. Aroma is a mixture of caramel malt and floral hoppiness. Well balanced with some sweetness up front and more bitterness coming through in the finish. Aggressively bitter enough to make the sweetness harder to make out after the first taste. Medium bodied with lingering bitter finish. This is a really good balanced IPA if you’re looking for something other than the West Coast style hop bombs.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark copper/ruby with off-white head. Aroma is caramel and toasted malts, floral and piney hops, faint spice, and faint cherries. Flavor is hop bitterness forward atop a lightly sweet malt base with subtle berry notes. Medium body.

Good citrusy IPA smell, slightly reddish brown appearance, taste is very slightly sweet up front, then mellow hops the rest of the ride...very slightly more bitter finish than desired though

Citrus aroma, very hoppy with grapefruit. Citrus flavors and very bitter on the palate. Good deal of lacing on the glass.

dark amber coloring with a somewhat malty nose. it has the lingering bitterness of an ipa but lacking on flavor. not a bad beer but only marginal

Pours a clear copper with a foamy off-white/beige head. Surprisingly pungent grapefruit bouquet. Soft mouthfeel with mildly burning carbonation and a hint of hop heat. A more robust roastiness in the malt profile than the color would suggest. A bit of rye. Grapefruit hop character.
